Well I am writing this from my hotel room in Athens, GA, where my father and I will be playing today and tomorrow. We actually made the trek out to Cateechee yesterday afternoon, but were rained out after nine holes. I really liked the front nine, with the highlight being the very cool and precipitous skyline green on the 4th. I hit a shot just over the back and ended up 20 feet below the green. It was all rough on which the ball sat up okay, so that made a very intimidating shot manageable, which gives the course playability points.
I also thought the irregular arrangement of pars on the front was neat too, with one par 4 in the first six holes; 5-3-5-4-5-3-4-4-4. The topography reminded me of Tot Hill Farm on the first two holes, but holes 3-7 opened up and were more like playing through old farmland. Very charming. I hope I get to see the back side soon, as it has a 300 yard par 4 and a 630 yard par 5.
So, here I am in Athens. What are your recommendations for courses within an hour or so? My father and I are heading out in a little while, so this would probably be for tomorrow's round, after which we'll be heading to Atlanta proper. Is Cherokee Run the best option, or are there some other worthy options?
About colleges. I'm looking for two proncipal criteria in the college I choose: strong academics and a golf team I may be able to play for. That basically puts Tech out of my path, that and the fact that I'm more interested in English than Engineering.
Thanks for the replies!
