Yale Changes

GCA.com's very fine and very thorough cybertour of the Yale Golf Course is becoming partially obsolete. Also, some of its criticisms have been directly addressed (12, 13 and 17 in particular) in the last two years and, while the focus of the ongoing work has changed, the pace hasn't slowed. I was there Friday and, what with a blanket of snow, it had an almost logging camp ambience. Massive tree trunks are stacked like cord wood waiting to be hauled away.
This winter's focus has been on the 10/18 area and the results will be quite startling for long time players. Despite the snow I took a little walk down 18 and observed that the cart path coming off the 18th tee no longer goes into the woods (they didn't move the path). Also, a blocked drive off the 10th tee will no longer land in a forest.
In the grand scheme of things, I think that the tree-cutting will allow the massive scale of the place (what other course is built on 700 acres?) to be recaptured and will enable the wind to become even more of a factor in play.

I'm hoping to get there in mid May (PB-are you lurking?) and look forward to seeing the changes- it's been about about three years since my last visit.

There was a lot of concern here about the bunkering on #5-

any news there?

Jim,

We played Yale last summer as I am sure Paul told you.  Just gets better and better.  Don't recall any problems with the bunkers on 5 (Short).

Aside from drainage, the biggest improvements were:

1.  Cutting the high grass on the banks (eg left greenside on 8) so that the ball can be found and runs to where it's supposed to, in the case of 8, the bunker; and
2.  The removal of trees which has changed the whole visual dimension of the place.  With all that fescue, most of which is out of play, and the rolling nature of the property, it's beautiful to look at from all sorts of angles.

If you come East in May you are invited to WCC.

Ran Morrissett- Ran loves this course.. He should be overjoyed and saw the changes last summer..
