Where in the world is Matt Ward?
« on: February 10, 2006, 03:33:38 PM »
Is it just me, or has Matt been awfully quiet for a while?  I heard a rumor that he has thrown himself into a long and detailed study of a comparison of golf in the Poconos vs Myrtle Beach.

Matt had to have surgery on his right hand from patting himself on the back too many times ;D
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I thought he'd have RSI from painting himself into one too many corners.  ;D

I saw a quote in Geoff Shack's 'Lines of Charm' which made me think of him.

"No real lover of golf with artistic understanding would undertake to measure the quality or fascination of a golf hole by a yard-stick, any more than a critic of poetry would attempt to measure the supreme sentiment expressed in a poem by the same method. One can understand the meter, but one cannot measure the soul expressed. It is absolutely inconceivable." C.B. Macdonald

MM
"The truth about golf courses has a slightly different expression for every golfer. Which of them, one might ask, is without the most definitive convictions concerning the merits or deficiencies of the links he plays over? Freedom of criticism is one of the last privileges he is likely to forgo."

Matt's still in rehab center but I'm told he's doing really well---thank you very much.

Why is he in a rehab center? Well, a couple of months ago early one morning on some golf course somewhere Matt reeeeeeeally, reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally smelt some reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelly strong, strong, stroooooong coffee and it like to blew his brains half out---so he's been in a rehab center for the last few month and they say some of his brain has grown back a bit----thank you very much.

Only problem is his brain has grown back a bit in his...........

Oh, never mind-----it's reeeeeeeeeeeally gross.

Anyway--it's all in good fun. I don't know where Matt is but I'll guarantee he'll be back.

Matt takes a lot of hits on this site.  Maybe his armor started to wear down a bit?

He gives out more hits than he takes.  Has this site lost anything in his absence?

I hear he is at a sanitarium for the humbly challenged.  He is taking daily doses of humility.

His head has shrunk so that he can almost fit through double doors.   There is some grave doubts that his ego will shrink anytime soon.  But they have him listening to Beethoven's 9th Symphony over and over again while writing on the chalk board " The number of courses I have seen does not necessarily mean anything" 500 times a day.

He is still having trouble though since they found him scribbling on scrap paper a ranking of the courses in North Dakota.  He was having trouble determining which of two courses ranked 74th or 75th in the state.

He might give out a lot of hits, but he also report on a vast number of courses that I will never see. He is also very clear about his likes and dislikes, making it easy to bring my own opinion to the courses he reviews (for example, I remember he didn't like that Sutton Bay had so many holes running in the same direction—that doesn't make much of a difference to me, so I can factor that into how I read his writeup). I hope he starts posting again soon now that spring is just around the corner.

and Noel Freeman, Geoffrey Childs, Paul Turner, George Blunt, Ted Sturges, Gib Papazian, Chris Clouser, Jeremy Glenn, Geoff Shackelford, Jamie Black, Dunlop White, Dan Kelly, Jeff Lewis, Lou Duran, Ken Cotner, David Wigler, Eric Pevoto, Justin Zook, Gary Sherman, Steve Sayers, Tony Pioppi, etc., etc., etc.

If number of threads/posts is indicative of the health of this board, then we're going great guns.

However...

I, for one, like Matt and get a kick out of his posts. I think he knows what he is talking about and I repect his opinions even if he sometimes goes over the top a bit.

He does make a very valid point, that if you have a good eye for design and shot values, a greater sampling of an architects work does have significance.
