Japanese & Other Asian Golf Photos: Hirono, Naruo, Tokyo GC !
« on: February 03, 2006, 02:00:39 AM »
I stumbled accross an excellent Japanese website which has photos from many top Japanese and other Asian courses on it. It is in Japanese language, so I cant see what they are saying about this courses, but the pics speak for themselves. Can anyone read Japanese?

Here is the main website:
www.kimigolf.com

Here is the link to Hirono:
http://www.kimigolf.com/japan/hirono/hirono.html

Naruo:
http://www.kimigolf.com/japan/naruo/naruo.html

Tokyo GC:
http://www.kimigolf.com/japan/Tokyo/Tokyo.html

These courses look pretty darn good to me.

Would be interested in hearing others comments. Also, check out some of the other Asian courses and see what you think. Caledonian looks very nice.

The trees around the edges of the courses look pretty thick and tangly! :o   I play a lot of tree-lined courses up here in the NW, but nothing looks as dense as the pines lining these Japanese courses.

Thanks for the links Evan!

Those are some damn fine Allison bunkers! For a country that is golf mad the courses seem uncrowded, both on the course and in the Clubhouse.

Would any of esteemed panelists care to share their experiences of playing in Japan? Is it absolutely necessary to play with a memeber? Do these Clubs allow architecure enthusuiasts to have a look around; or even play? Is the language barrier difficult to overcome without the help of someone who speaks the local tongue?

Thanks in advance. Great link Evan.

For an imperfect solution in an imperfect world, you can go to babelfish.altavista.com, put in the web address of one of the sites below, select "Translate from Japanese to english," and get at least some idea of what is being said on the sites. Sometimes the translations are funny, but you'll get the idea.

Are all three Japanese courses Colt & Alison, or just Alison?  I thought he designed Hirono without Colt, and also without any direction from the membership, which I read was quite unique in Japan during this period.

And, thanks to Kirk for the translation website.  It's like reading these captions in verse.

I think I'm going to write from now on like I was just translated from Japanese....

On Hirono's 4th:

"When the pin is foreward, when it short-circuits even a little, assuming, that it struck even if in the front edge, urgent inclination foreward the artillery green it rolls and being to fall, note is needed."

On the 13th:

"A little, it strikes and with lowering, the short hole where the creek exceeding is beautiful."

Any designer would aspire to these words.... :)
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

I copied the first paragraph of Mr. Green's original post on this thead into babelfish, and translated it into Japanese, and then back from Japanese into english. This will give you an idea of how questionable the tranlations are, even though it IS a very cool tool:

"As for me as for the other Asian person who has the photograph from Japanese accross many above the excellent Japanese flows with that web sight stumble. That there is Japanese, therefore they this flow, you call, but as for pics I look at that you speak because of them themselves, it tilts. Anyone can read the Japanese?"

That cracks me up! It is a neat tool though. It's always frustrating to find a great website and not be able to read it!
