Malaga GC
« on: October 16, 2005, 11:32:19 PM »
Anyone have any info on Malaga GC in Spain? Apparently (according to Peugeot Guide) it was the first course built in the area, in the 1920's by H Colt, supevised by T Simpson!! I have some work in the area in January and may add an extra couple of days to my itinerary if it sounds worth it. Can't say I'm too excited by the more well known 200 Euro RTJ courses. But I'm open to ideas..

Here is a link to the homepage:

The course is normally called the Parador. So ask for that.

Havenīt played it though.

Malaga GC is probably the flatest, least interesting thing that Colt or Simpson ever had anything to do with. (I am a great admirer of both.) Don't waste your time.

You can look down on Jones as though you are urinating upon him from a great height, but his courses in Andalucia are simply superior to Malaga GC. Try Valderrama, Sotogrande, and Las Brisas for openers. Any of them are worth twenty Malagas.

This article is interesting:
http://www.costadelgolfdigital.com/noticias.php?Noticia=2044&Lng=Eng

To precis, Malaga was founded in 1925, Colt did a design, the Spanish Civil War and WW2 intervened and little was left, Simpson was brought in after 1945, started with 9, became 18 by 1964 (the year Simpson died BTW)

I'd no idea there was a golden age course there - but from the article above and Steve Okula's report I guess there isn't.

I am the last guy to get into an on line altercation. They make this site a pain in the ass to get around. But I think I said I was't too excited by the RTJ courses, but was open to ideas. Doesn't sound like toilet language to me. I have actually enjoyed a few RTJ courses and that was one of the reasons I'd prefer something else, but if that is the best best, then thanks for the tip.

Lloyd, if I had spare time in the broad vicinity of Malaga then I would spend some of it travelling to Rhonda (the road from Malaga is memorable) and Cadiz - two beautiful towns - and play at Valderrama and San Roque (staying at the latter).

Malaga GC is not worthy of any special effort.  It's okay if you need to catch a flight at the airport nearby and have a few hours to kill.

Agree with Steve re: Sotogrande and Las Brisas (didn't play Valderrama).  I would also add Los Naranjos and the older, shorter Golf Rio Real to that list.
