Logan Air offers a day trip to Cambeltown and I was wondering if anyone has made this trip and could comment.


The Day Away package, available Monday to Friday, includes return flights from Glasgow to Campbeltown. Flights depart Glasgow at 0910, and 40 minutes later on arrival at Campbeltown transport will be waiting to take you to the Golf Course. Tee off time will be arranged and on completion of your round, lunch will be served in the Clubhouse. Transport will then take you back to Campbeltown for the 1730 flight to Glasgow.

The minimum number of golfers is 4 with a maximum of 12. However, if your group size is larger, contact Loganair nevertheless for additional golfers may be accommodated. A non-refundable deposit is required 6 weeks prior to departure, with the balance payable no later than 4 weeks prior to departure. If booked within 4 weeks of departure, full payment is required.

The day away rates are:

£119    April and July
£139    May, June, August and September

Joel - I haven't done it but friends of mine have.  Their take was it was a long way to go and a lot of hassle for one round of golf.  Oh, they didn't regret it, and it did work out fine... but let's just say my other friends who went and stayed overnight and thus got in FOUR rounds enjoyed themselves much more.

Here's another caveat:  my last trip over I was contemplating trying to do this on the front or back end, so I tried like hell to match up flights from CA to Glasgow and then connecting to this Loganair thing, but I never could make it work.  None got there in time to make 0910 flight on the front end, nor could I find any decent evening going home flights to connect to on the back end.  However one did it was going to require an overnight in Glasgow.

Loganair's tour operator also offers overnight and two-night versions of that trip. I'd think the overnight one would be the most attractive of the bunch since you could probably get in 36 holes on the first day if you went during summertime.

The Machrie hotel offers unlimited-golf, dinner, bed&breakfast packages without airfare attached. If you buy your own tickets through British Airways you need to stay over a weekend to get a cheap fare.

[EDIT] Tom, I think the way to tack on a Machrie trip is to arrive at GLA from the states, wait around a few hours if necessary for the late afternoon flight to Islay and do it on the front end of the trip. Then you can return on the morning flight from Islay to GLA and begin the rest of your trip around noonish on day three (meaning two nights at Machrie for one full day of golf, still beats cooling your heels in Glasgow overnight).

Brent - that's the best way to do it for sure. But back in 2002 when I looked into this, they didn't have afternoon flights from Glasgow to Islay or Campbeltown, nor morning flights in the reverse direction. it was morning or nothing.... One flight over in am, one flight back in pm, that's it.

BTW, my friends did the overnight Logainair version.  Went out of Glasgow 9:10 am, played all day, stayed overnight, played most of the next day and flew back 1730.  Had a hell of a great time.  Methinks that's the best way to do this.  But that does mean TWO extra days onto a trip.  If one has that to spare, then great.  

I sadly only had one day...

But I'll get there some day.

Played Machrie and stayed overnight.

Been twice to Machrihanish.

Whatever it takes, it's worth the trip.

For my trip next year I can only do one. It's Machrihanish hands down, as much as I'd love to see Machrie.

I drove since I already had a car, was in Dornoch and had to return the car in Birmingham. British Airways has flights from Glasgow to Islay and also to Campbeltown. Can't find any direct flights between the two destinations. Try

What was the comment Bob Huntley made about Spyglass Hill? To paraphrase, Machrie is a delightful hors d'oeuvre but Machrihanish is a satisfying meal.

Wallet permitting, I could play Spyglass many many times without getting sick of it. I can't say the same about Machrie.
Tooooo many blind shots to convoluted surfaces, and I like blind shots and convoluted surfaces.

However, by all means try to get to Machrie - give up something else!

I would do the Logan Air deal rather than not play. However, I enjoyed the drive as well as the natural beauty of the area. plus it was nice to play 3 rounds over a few days without any rush. I played another course on the south end of the peninsula that was fun. This is a special place and should be taken in and not played like a dockers commercial.

Interesting idiom... I have an idea what that's supposed to mean, but I don't really understand how dockers commercials are related?

Is there some golf related dockers commercial I haven't seen?  Or do the people in the ads strike you as the Perry Bus types?  Cigar chompers with fake comraderie? Or what?

Agree, visit Machrihanish often.
Machrie is a blast and there are a lot of blind shots.
If short on time, my opinion is to concentrate on Machrihanish.

Dunaverty (at the end of the mull, to the south) is okay but you can't miss another round at Machrihanish for Dunaverty.  My thought would be to play Dunaverty if you are there for a long holiday.
