Palmetto Golf Club

Does anyone know the rule on playing this one during Master's week?  I have heard that they open the gates up and let anyone in.  Is this true and has anyone played it that week?

It's my understanding that Palmetto is open for outside play that week.  Not sure the rules or times and so forth, but it appears that you don't need to be sponsored.

They do allow play that week. It gets very crowded. Crenshaw usually plays Saturday or Sunday, but he may be a member.
It is otherwise not very difficult to get on anytime. The membership is quite accomodating.

I played Palmetto on a couple of occasions over the last few years during Masters week. The process was, and may still be, to simply call the club and reserve a time. It think, as I remember, they fax a form which you sign with a credit card guarantee.
Since the leaders at the tournament get off after lunch, it is a great way to kill the morning before going to Augusta.
The golf course is very old school and terrific---MacKenzie from around 1900.

Where else can you find info on Palmetto?  I must admit that I didn't know of this course.  I googled it and didn't come up with much.

What's the slope rating from the tips? Do you have any information or contacts for me as I might be visiting down in the South Carolina area this spring. Pullllleeeeeeeeeehhhhhzzzz!!!!!!!

How well does the course test the golfer from tee to green?

Many thanks for the superb information and use of your contacts amigo. Time to take a pill!

Brock,

There has been talk of Palmetto on a number of occasions here in the past few years.

Here's the AOTD thread of Palmetto (scroll down, it was the stumper, #2, that day):

Try a search back a couple of years to check for more threads.

There is a great book entitled:  "Augusta and Aiken in Golf's Golden Age" by Stan Byrdy.  I think that there was a thread a year or so ago on this book.  There are several great clubhouse pictures in the book and even a small aerial.  I would recommend the book to everyone, Stan Byrdy is a former longtime TV anchor in Augusta and a golf nut he also happens to be close friends with one of my best friends who reminded me that there was some info in the book.

The Palmetto clubhouse is the second oldest in the country behind Shinnecock's clubhouse.

Brock,

Both clubhouses also share the same architect - Stanford White.

My buddy told me that there is no chance to get on that week because they book up so fast but I just called and was told that they aren't too booked that week.  They charge $150 from Monday through Sunday for Masters week.

I haven't yet secured Masters tix yet but I find this to be rather interesting and inviting.
