Ramon,
I'm always suspicious when this question gets asked. Invariably, someone wants to quote someone long ago as a means to prove that people today warning about the dangers of the golf technlogy arms race must be wrong.
By that logic, we SHOULD build golf courses 8,000 yards long or maybe even longer. How else do we keep up with technology "improvements"?
Hopefully, at some point people will see through all that nonesense. The essence of the game is the BALANCE between player skill, the equipment deployed and the configuration of the playing field.
Making things ever bigger doesn't make them better. It just makes the game more expensive to play.
When will we wake up?
Golfers want to play more not pay more!
