Quote
"If possible, it is well to have the second hole come back to the club, so that tie matches may for the first three holes be never over the distance of one fairway from home.  Also, if one is late in arriving one may pick up friends at the third tee. - George C. Thomas, Jr.

Off the top of my head, I cannot think of such a routing.

Make it a good day.

Mike- SFGC second heads back towards the clubhouse. Interesting nuance GT mentions. Never woulda thought of that one but makes sense and is another reason why the original config at Pinon Hills is better. ;D

Of course this wouldn't work at a place like the TOC, so did Thomas mean this for "club" type courses or American??

Riviera CC does this.

Mike,

All you need to look at is Thomas' most famous design, Riviera.  #2 returns to the foot of the clubhouse.  #3 tee is also right by the driving range.

Adam,

I totally forgot about SFGC.  The routing there is interesting and totally rebuts Thomas' parallel holes quote, primarily due to the topo on the first nine.

This seems like architecture masquerading as babysitting for members that can't show up on time or can't tell when the sun is going down.

Frankly, I like having multiple holes returning to the clubhouse, because that gives more options of jumping out on the course if #1 and/or #10 are stacked up.

Have you ever started on #16 at RCC?  I've started at #16 (also by the clubhouse) at my club many times.

Scott,

Sure, I've gone off #16 with 4 clubs and 3 beers many times (or maybe vice-versa).  But we rarely start there to avoid #1/#10 backup.

I'm not against holes near the clubhouse, but it seems to be that Thomas' comment is trying to force the routing to serve non-routing purposes.

I knew that's what you meant.   ;D  As one who plays solo quite a bit, I don't like being held up!

The same can be said for returning #9 to the clubhouse.  Many times it could be at the expense of the best possible routing.
