My dad is traveling to San Antonio the week following Christmas. He wants to play Brackenridge (sp?) Park and had heard it was a Tillinghast course. Is he on the right track? Is it worth playing?

Anywhere else he could play between Dallas and San Antonio, I have already told him of the nice words about the Nicklaus course near Austin from the site.

Any help is appreciated. I did try to search the site, but didn't find anything related to golf in that area. Thanks!!

Brackenridge park .. from local info..  In October 1915, within a year of Lambert taking office, it was reported that the 18-hole Brackenridge Park golf course was under construction. Noted course designer A.W. Tillinghast of Philadelphia laid out the Brackenridge course to take advantage of the meanders of the river, and though it was constructed on one side of the waterway, golfers crossed the river at several points. A clubhouse was also proposed, as well as a swimming hole "so that after the game the players may enjoy a plunge in the delightful waters of the San Antonio River."

A must play in city is Pecan Valley.

Palmer Course at La Cantera Resort if great fun, I like it more than Weiskoff/Morrish Tex Open Course at main resort.

There is very little Tillie left at Breckinridge, and Pecan Valley is not what it used to be either.  I had a really entertaining round at The Bandit in New Braunfels, 30 miles north, a solid Keith Foster design.  New Braunfels is a fun place, German immigrants settled the place and the annual Wurstfest is a big deal.

If you can swing it try the new Nicklaus course called Cimarron Hills just north of Austin by about 30 minutes. It's a superb effort and well worth one's time. Just keep in mind it's a private residential club but they may be open to some outside play.

Steve, the one thing I found amusing at The Bandit was the par 3 named "Redan" on the scorecard, don't remember which one now after a couple of years.  I remember thinking at the time, there is no par 3 on this course that remotely resembles a Redan!  Do you remember this?

Another great Keith Foster course in the area is The Quarry...nine holes of "typical" Foster stuff (take that in a good way), then nine holes cut out of an old rock quarry and done in a Foster way...very cool stuff indeed, especially the last few finishing holes that play right up against the quarry walls.

A good walk and a fun course all around.

I like both courses at La Canterra alot. Barton Creek has a good Fazio course and Coore and Crenshaw course. Horseshoe Bay Applerock is good.

I have played the LaCanterra (Wieskoff/Morrish) and The Quarry. I preferred the Quarry of the two.

Anybody played Olympia Hills or Silverhorn?

I've played both Olympia Hills and Silverhorn a few times.  Silverhorn is a little shorter and requires more shot placement off the tees, not necessarily using a driver every hole.  Just about every hole is routed through trees.  Olympia Hills has a lot of elevation changes.  I think the front nine is better than the back nine, where a few of the holes run out of the hills and trees and are pretty bland.  I think they've played some Hooters Tour tournaments at Olympia.

Would that be the Texas Golf Club at Briggs Ranch?  Isn't that supposed to be a Lee Trevino course?

No, the Trevino course is the "public" Briggs Ranch.....there is the Briggs Ranch Golf Club....Fazio designed.......$50K initiation......a slice of heaven in the San Antonio area
