Now here’s a fairway bunker I like-7 at Riviera

The long and angled left to right bunker is beautiful and strategic. It is much better than your average fairway bunker that sits parallel to play.

Is that not the Fazio bunker that has been lambasted on here pretty regularly?

I’m glad to see you like it, Mike. Without being reminded so often what to like or not to like, we’d be much more varied in our opinions.

Mike,

I haven’t watched the tournament on TV, but just from looking at that bunker on Google Earth I’m wondering how tour players play it.

Do many try to fly over that bunker?

I think they play short of it but if you miss your line you can end up in it.

Mike,

That is what I assumed. Can you or Ally describe the criticism people on this site had of what Fabio did?

It would be nice if Geoff Shackelford or Tommy Naccarato would comment. Both are well known Fabio critics and of course Geoff has a love for Riviera.

The fairway bunker on #7 was an original in the 1927 design.  Aerials confirm this.  Some alterations through the years necessitated building up the 7th fairway due to flooding in the barranca, and the fairway bunker was removed.  About 20 or so years ago the Fazio design firm put the bunker back.  Reactions are mixed on the restoration of the original.  I think it is too deep and a bit too contrived(made by machines).  But it did bring back the original design intent which was to make it difficult to bail out onto the 15th fairway.
It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

Lynn,

Thanks. Funny thing. After my post I thought I should have mentioned you as well as Geoff and Tommy.

Hope you are doing well and sorry for your loss.

Luke List just hit his tee shot in the bunker. I think it is one of those bunkers you don’t worry about but end up in.

As I look at Google I think the bunker farther up on the right causes the layup as well. It’s a nice design.

Cantlay just hit into it. I rest my case! Add Schauffele.

Having to hit over the hazard also causes problems.

If it were less concave it would be more punishing. The three shots I saw rolled into an easy spot.

We underrate bunkers on the outside of turning points. I very much like the ones that are mostly out of range for a weak player, but that challenge undisciplined bailouts for the strong one. This is a great example, as far as I can tell from here.
