Hyde Park ( Ross & Bendelow)
« on: September 09, 2004, 05:20:13 PM »
This is a well designed golf course that traverses nice hilly land north of Cincinnati, Ohio. Hyde Park laced with ravines and this sporty layout also benefits from many fine greens.

I think Tim Liddy may be doing some restoration work. The super is very attuned the value of the design
and a very nice person. Has anyone played here or familiar with Hyde Park's
master plan ?

Brad Klien was involved in the masterplan effort a few years ago. He uses it as an example of masterplanning in "Discovering Donald Ross."

HPCC doesn't get the recognition it deserves locally. I've always enjoyed playing there. Strong par threes. Wonderful use of existing contours, as mentioned. Using Klien's Golfweek course rating template, it would be #2 in Cinci. behind (surprise) Camargo among classic courses. IMO Camargo is the only "must play" around here, but HPCC would be a fine addition if you had the time.

The first hole is presently being revised by Tim Liddy from an 'Art Hills' version back to a design following the master plan/Klein/Liddy.

I understand bunker work and 'restoration' enlargement of a few greens are the next items up for near term work.

As previously mentioned, the superintendent, Joe Kaczmarek, is doing a fine job and is very much attuned to the architecture.

I've played off and on at Hyde Park for more than 30 years as it was my high school's home course and my uncle was a member. My family has had a member at the club for four generations. And, my cousin recently found a silver trophy for the Vice-President's Cup that my great-grandfather won in 1923.

I joined the club almost three years ago. I am now on the grounds committee. Hopefully, I will be able to share some exciting news later this month on a new master plan for the course.

The previous work, done by Tim Liddy, was done without any Ross drawings. Shortly after the work was completed, a member found the complete set of Ross drawings in the attic of his parents' house (I think I have that correct.) Despite not having these drawings, Liddy's new first green is eerily similar to Ross' first green. I have the pdfs of the drawings. They are very detailed, have some green alterations/changes made by Ross, and a drawing of every bunker on the course with instructions on how to build them. If someone can post them or help me to, I will be glad to share them.

Regarding Bendelow, if my memory of the club history is correct, he did the original nine holes. Then, another nine was added by the pro and members. Then, Ross redesigned the course in 1921. Although, I believe he kept what is now the 12th hole, a long par 3 over two ravines with an fantastic green, because he thought it was so good.

I must shout out our super as he does a fantastic job maintaining the course and is super keen to restore as much Ross as he possibly can.

I can help out with posting or helping. Let me know.

That's quite an exciting find, and I'm excited to hear about the master plan.

As you may have read, we threw our master plan in the garbage and added a water feature on 11, which was NOT in the master plan. *shudder*

Thanks Steve, I never played Hyde Park despite having grown up in Cincinnati and spending quite a few years trying to worm my way onto as many courses as I could! I've always heard good things about it, and certainly the land around the club is interesting so I would think the course occupies a fun property. I've seen a few threads about it over the years but not much. I'd love to see more, does anyone know if there is a photo tour on GCA? Or maybe we should wait until after this plan is put into practice?

I never played Hyde Park

Shoot me a message and we can work out a time to get you out there.

I'm not much of a photographer and it is too much of a burden while I'm playing, but I would be happy to provide the commentary for someone who takes the pictures.

On a recent trip to Cincinnati, another Cleveland friend and I had the pleasure of playing a round of golf at HP with Steve. Having this built-in "tour guide" was invaluable and added many levels of enjoyment to our day and round there.

HP is lucky to have a guy like Steve on their grounds committee and I expect the upcoming announcements to be made with excitement and an eye towards the future improving of an already fantastic golf course.  I wait with anxious anticipation!
