Your example reminds me of my favorite line from Bernard Darwin's Golf Courses of the British Isles, where he described the approach to the 17th at North Berwick as being so frightening for the trouble over the green that most players played it "on the instalment system, and it is really [fun] to see how many instalments may be required".  [Sadly, I do not have the book at hand to get the quote exactly right.  I will revert when I do.]


It appears from his description that back in the day the 17th was a double green with the 1st and the flag could be way left. 

I believe that back in the day the greens were essentially switched. Which seems like a really weird way to number the holes and create an unnecessary cross over given the 18th tee is essentially an extension of the current 17th green.

Ben...you figured out the angle from which to shoot #6 at CCB. It is my high school (I coach) team's home course, and we are beyond fortunate to be there. Now, about not connecting while you were in town ...

It is hard to believe but I only played one new course. I only played where I was a member. The new course was at Indianwood CLub's new course in Michigan. The hole I liked the most was number two. It is a dogleg right about 400 yards with wetlands along the entire right side. What makes the hole though is the shot into the green. The green sits just over a wetland and cants from left to right. The green is severlesloped from back to front. If you hit the shot to the back of the green it will come back. It is foolish not to use it. It's not a great ho0le but it sure is well thought out.

I only played CCB once but I seem to remember the green being higher in the air. It seem to be floating in the quarry.

Rob...when you are above it (quarry rim) it looks completely different from when your approach, or being left/right. It is a hole that I take for granted, having seen it sooo many times in matches, and I shouldn't. My favorite par three of the four is #16...it is almost a reverse Redan, but doesn't have enough of a kick plate, as it plays decidedly uphill.

I played several that really wowed me:


The first is the 4th hole at the Oaks at Kinchelo on that was the course for the Kinross Air Force Base.  The course was designed by Bob Baldock.  I came to the fourth hole and was shocked, it is a par 3 around 200 yards that plays over a valley of glacier sand.  The hole does not feel like it belongs in a good way.  I wish more of this area north of the course has been incorporated.


The second is the fifth hole at New Castle CC designed by A.W. Tillinghast. It is a par 5 of 589 yards.  The hole is a slight dog leg left and the green is 100 % blind set about 30 feet below with a creek right in front.

Luckily I got to Scotland to play for the first time this year. Played a few nice courses but wanted to pick something a bit off the beaten track, so the 3rd at Castle Stuart it is for me. Great risk-reward par 4. Copious ways to play it. Great hole

469 par 4.
Tee shot over water and hole bows right to left.
Elevated green bordering the ocean.


Wide FW but the closer to the water your tee shot, the easier line you had to a green to hit the receptive side.


Fun, beautiful, challenging.
