Abrupt drops in elevation or gradual?
« on: October 09, 2020, 11:28:47 AM »
I played Morris County yesterday which has several holes where the fairways fell down abruptly to a lower level and it is at least 20 feet so not a small thing.
I’m used to a consistently gradual elevation change in the fairway.

I’m interested in your view of that.

I thought while it was fun  a lot of ground is unplayable.

Where they more or less abrupt than the false fronts at your course?

Other than 2&7 what did you have in mind. I think both of those holes are a blast.

Greens on 4&9 sit high but there’s not much unique about the long roll back for those who come up short.

I thought of that. That’s why I said “fell down”.

To me it depends on how much elevation changevthere is, overall.  If there's not much to work with, I'd rather have some abrupt drops.  If the site leans toward hilly, you don't need it to be abrupt.

The Cascades has an interesting combination of abrupt and gentle ups and downs from hole 2 through 10.

That’s true about Cascades. I really enjoyed that.

I think I was in a foul mood when I started this topic.  It’s a weak premise.

Mike,
If you want to see some courses with abrupt ups and downs, you should go play some of the courses around Pittsburgh.  When I was working on Master Plan for Bucknell GC I was out there studying a bunch of Loeffler designs.  Talk about hilly terrain to work with.  I liked Morris County.  I didn’t take issue with the elevation changes.

Abrupt down slopes might be necessary if you have a length problem and you want the landing area to be flat, therefore avoiding long rolls. You need to loose all the elevation before say the 200 yards and then have a flatter fairway. Especially if you are going to have fast/dry fairways.

On the 100 year old courses I play in the U.K. steep drops of 40 ft or more are fairly common. They are nearly always incorporated into a drop shot par 3 hole rather than part of a longer hole.

Generally people love ‘em!
