« on: June 16, 2020, 07:14:55 PM »
Keith Evans, ASGCA Fellow, dies at 76 — U.S. Army veteran worked with Rees Jones for 32 years.
(June 15, 2020)

Keith Evans, a Fellow of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, died June 14, 2020, in Lansing, Michigan. He was age 76.

A U.S. Army veteran, Evans earned two degrees from Michigan State University: business administration and landscape architecture. After brief stints with the golf course design firms Joseph Finger & Associates and Richard Watson, Inc., Evans began working with Rees Jones, Inc., Golf Course Design in 1979. He worked with ASGCA Past President Jones for the next 32 years, until his retirement in 2011.

Evans’ design work across North America includes: Baker Hill Golf Club, Newbury, New Hampshire, Huntsville Golf Club, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Thousand Oaks Golf Club, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Rio Secco, Las Vegas, and London Hunt & Golf Club, London, Ontario, Canada.

Evans became an ASGCA member in 1980 and achieved Fellow status in 2014. He is survived by his wife, Eileen, and daughters, Jennifer and Jessica. Memorials may be made to the Gift of Hope for which he was a donor, Laingsburg (Michigan) Food Bank or the American Stroke Foundation. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Keith was a great guy. When I first met him in 2000 I figured he was quiet and reserved, which was true. But he had a great dry sense of humor. Every time I got to speak with him it was a pleasure. From what I recall it was Evans who first began working with Ress on US Open and Tournament courses, eventually carving out that component of the Jones' Office. I recall the occasion of him becoming an ASGCA fellow...few words, but gracious and proud to have reached that milestone.

What a good guy ! RIP  Met him in mid 90's in Montclair and talked GCA with him on many occasions. A real gentleman and a mans man. Just a down to earth guy who worked hard and loved the game!

He will be missed

I had the pleasure of working with Keith on a project in California in the mid 2000's.  All I can say is he was a great guy and he knew his stuff.  I'm glad to have known him....

I was fortunate to become friends with Keith while building LedgeRock. You never knew when he'd drop one of his zingers at you, leaving everyone laughing. Everyone looked forward to seeing him whenever he visited. He was such a great character, a great guy and an even better friend, may he rest in peace.

Sorry to hear the news.  Keith got into ASGCA a year before me, so we spend a bit of time conversing, me hoping he could "show me the ropes."  Agree on the basically dry humor, shown on occasion, but mostly he seemed pretty serious and intent to me.  It did seem he probably deserved far more credit for some of Rees' accomplishments than he typically received.
