I know there are a few who are interested in this course and have been trying to find out a bit about it.

I just came across this aerial, well, small pieces at www.ukaerialphotos.com that I have managed to put together as one image to show what remained of the course when this was taken, the date given is only 1945-1950, but you can see the new housing eating into the remaining holes.

I have marked Shirley Church Road in red. For those not familiar, it is the eastern boundary of the Old course which still exists at The Addington, with both the 18th and 2nd holes running south along the road, with the clubhouse (marked CH) between them. Everything on the east (the right hand side) of the red line is the New Course. I think I can count nine whole or partial holes.

It's fascination when you look at the current day image below it to see some partial fairway corridors remain open. I'd love to go for a wander and have a look at those areas.

Thanks Scott - Is the famous 8th on the New course a disappeared hole under that housing estate? I suspect so...

Thanks for that aerial.  It just happens to answer a question (at least until after WWII) about the 7th. I wondered if the bunkers in that funky ridge short of the green were at one timed joined.  In the aerial they are shown as separate.

Sean, the rest of The Addington is pretty interesting in itself for how little it has changed. I will see if I can piece together a full image of the Old course.

Thanks for the info. When did this course close?

It seems remarkable that the land these abandoned holes occupy has not been developed at some point in the past couple of decades, especially given how expensive land and property is in and around London.

It was converted to housing post WW2, David.

Given this aerial is before 1950 they obviously didn't waste any time getting to work.

That's the current GoogleMaps image, so within the last couple of years, I would say.

When I play there I usually get the tram to Addington Village (to the south) and walk up Spout Hill and Shirley Church Rd to the club, so I have looked in at that land a bunch, but I never knew it was golf course once upon a time. I am really tempted to go down for a walk and see what I can see. Maybe I can even get in there and get some pics of those remaining corridors.

If they haven't touched it there may well be some shaping still discernable.

If the color photo is relatively recent, I am still a little surprised that any of the golf course still remains undeveloped, even if it is just 3 or 4 holes.

All the holes I have marked are on The Addington course that exists to this day - the lost course is on the right of the red line.

I'm not too familiar with the Addington (I will get there one day!) so I was only loosley aware of another course. I'd always wondered if those gaps in the trees to the other side of the road used to be that course but as David T says, its suprising that they haven't been developed also. What are they used for these days?

As Tony M mentions on the other thread, we are going to miss your enthusiasm for your adopted golfing home! It is infectious and I've found myself trying to fit in as many courses as possible myself, before realising I'm not being sent back to the convict colony like you are

The land doesn't seem to have a use at all James. To the far right looks like it is marked up as a football field, but other than that - nothing it seems.

I am majorly intregued. As my memory serves and Google Street View seems to confirm, getting in there shouldn't prove too hard.

I may well duck over there this weekend with the camera and see if I can find anything interesting.

I'm heading out for a hit at Worplesdon this afternoon - another Abercromby course (though he did it with Park and he did The Add with Colt) and I was thinking of seeing if they have any info on him in their archives that might be worth sifting through.

I have sod all time left before I leave the UK, but maybe I can find a little and leave it to Tony to use as I know he has been stockpiling tidbits on Aber for a little while now.

I wish I had time to look through clubs archives, or rather I wish they were more open to requests. I did once ask at Lindrick regarding a query from Neil Crafter about possible MacKenzie involvement, but they basically looked at me like a lunatic and passed me a copy of an old history book at arms length

Interesting scorecard with five short holes and six "fives", although only two or three of them were really par-5 length, and none of them would be today!
