OT - Bandon Over Thanksgiving?
« on: January 16, 2020, 12:28:58 PM »
Has anyone ever been to Bandon over the Thanksgiving weekend? I am wondering how busy the place usually is then.

Years ago I was told that the best availability at Bandon was during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, maybe even New Years. Don't know if that is still true. This year the rate break happened the weekend before Thanksgiving. The group that I used to belong to made reservations just before Thanksgiving based on rates and weather, but has switched to February.

Pete,

I've been to Bandon in March, April and May for four days/three to four nights each time, and I think I've had one sunny day combined.  The weather has ranged from heavy sleet necessitating taking refuge in a deep bunker to playable with proper protection.  I can think of only a handful of days in Ireland where I was more uncomfortable playing golf.

Those on the West Coast can watch the weather maps and catch a break during the low-season.  For me and many in my part of the country, the UK is the superior option.  All three times I've been to Bandon I came away appreciating the experience, but always thinking that I don't need to go back.  It's been a while since the King Putter.  I could be talked into returning in the not-too-distant future.

Lou,
Yes, we Oregonians can look at the weather and make last minute plans. I made many trips where I would stay in Corvallis with my brother, then drive to Bandon for two rounds of golf with 1 overnight stay. But the group I was talking about had to make their pre-Thanksgiving reservations a year in advance.

David:

It can be relatively busy.  Last year there were approximately 300 rounds a day for each of Fri/Sat/Sun, which was busier than the previous two weekends but not as busy as the first two weekends of the month.

Lou overstates the winter weather out here, although he may be fairly describing his own bad luck.  This year there have been more "nice" days than not, and oddly enough its been warmer than normal.

Just read the title, but no thanks. I prefer Thanksgiving dinner over Bandon...…. ;)

Where T-giving dinner is concerned, I am a supporter of food writer Calvin Trillin, who has campaigned to replace turkey with spaghetti carbonara. ;)

Sven,

Could very well be- my characterization of the March-May weather and "bad luck".  But I have come across a number of one-time visitors to Bandon whose main objection is the weather followed by the logistics; never once have I heard complaints about the courses, conditioning, or scenery.

Jeff,

One of my golf guys has found the perfect answer to the Thanksgiving feast: order it from Whole Foods ready-to-serve.  I don't know if they deliver to Bandon, but my bet is that a suitable substitute can be found there.

I’ve been to Bandon seven times, in May and October. I’ve experienced one day of rain which affected nine holes of play. It’s been cold and windy when I’ve played, but I’ve been lucky in terms of rain.

I have a friend who made reservations well ahead of Thanksgiving for his group from Royal Oaks. Two of the three days they had a hard freeze, and were not allowed to play. That is very highly unusual, but it happens.

Myself, I have only played there in January in sunshine and 60 degree weather. 4 trips total for 12 rounds.

If you are willing to play the Oregon weather game and pay last minute flight prices you can do it too. One year a buddy flew in from LA to join me. Skipped out on his wedding anniversary. His wife does not appreciate his golf pimp, me.

A veteran starter told me Thanksgiving through December were the slowest times at Bandon, BUT that it was ticking up during Thankgiving and Christmas over the last few years due to families making repeat visits and starting their own Holiday Traditions.
He siad it was still the slowest time, but not slow-days are short so it doesn't take much to sell out.
January this year was sold out. I was there Jan 2-5th and the weather was perfect sunny, breezy and 47-55 degrees every day.
I booked about 2 weeks out and pickings were very slim but it all worked out perfectly(we were only playing 18 daily) and even late tee times("not guaranteed to finish") played in 4:20 and finished easily-pretty good for late times on packed, fully booked courses. The second day we teed off at 8:10 and our  ball played in 3:40-so early that we went to play the Preserve-our 4 ball(different 2) took nearly 3 hours there!
