"Relatively speaking it seems this year has been quite a cold Spring-early Summer by U.K. standards."

Thomas -

Are you sure about that? The Highlands had a much warmer usual April and the gorse bloom was well under way by the time we arrived in Dornoch on May 10. Usually the gorse is just beginning to bloom around that time.

I spent last week at Tenby and while the greens are fine the fairways are in very poor condition. Last year's drought seems to have killed a lot of grass and the subsequent bare patches are now full of moss. Winter rules are in place at least until the end of June.

I was party to a lot of member discontent about some of the decisions made over the winter but assiduously did not get involved!

What I don't understand is that they appear to have fairway irrigation. At least, they have sprinkler heads on the fairways...

... whether they function or not is another question. I didn't like to ask!

There was a map that the BBC weather folks showed recently indicating the different weather pattens in different parts of the U.K. this year. Roughly speaking/writing, it showed that the south east has been wetter than usual this year whilst the western side of the country and the Midlands have been drier and cooler.

There's a tiny bit of south east Kent that is, technically a desert, given the astonishingly low annual rainfall, I seem to recall.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Blog on how Luffness New dealt with last summer's heat wave to improve their fairway turf.
