Caddie's view of the US Open at Pebble Beach
« on: June 09, 2019, 06:12:06 PM »
I don't normally go to ESPN for my golf commentary, but this was a pretty good article I thought using a long time caddie at Pebble Beach for his take on each hole. Certainly much better than any Michael Collins takes.

As the article's title suggests, the caddie doesn't expect to see many drivers off the tee.  On the front nine alone, he says most players will hit irons on 1,3, 4, 6 and 8.  Add the two par 3s and that could mean irons on 7 of the first 9 holes.  He also says in the last Open there, DJ drove the par 4 4th hole, with a 3-iron.

Since the USGA seems unwilling to tackle the tech/distance revolution, what will they do the course 20 years from now, to try and keep it competitive for the world's best?

PS: can someone who knows the course explain to me why number 8 is so great?  Hit a middish-iron off the tee, and another onto the green.  Why is that superb golf?

No. 8 is great because of the visual and atmospheric  adjustments. Second shot plays over 200 yards over a chasm with waves crashing and gusts of wind off the cliffs to a narrow green guarded by a deep bunker in front and another back and back left. Very hard to judge distance with those conditions. Green breaks hard back to front so you don't want to be long.
Also I doubt many irons off 6 tee if they want to get on in two. Drive and second shot are directly into wind off the ocean.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Jim - don't confuse how a hole plays under rock-hard US Open conditions for elite players with how it plays normally.  Regular players don't hit an iron off #8 tee.

Since this thread is already OT, US Open discussion is never complete until we've talked PM...
