Bobby Jones Golf Course - Atlanta GA
« on: February 11, 2019, 09:36:41 AM »
Got to play the newly renovated Bobby Jones GC in Atlanta GA yesterday and Saturday.  For those who don't know it BJGC was a 18 hole municipal course that was completely re-done into a 9 hole reversible course.  It was done by the Cupp father and son team.

I'm happy to report that the renovation is a big success.  The work was very well thought out for a municipal format.  There is no rough, few trees, and pretty easy drives which keeps play moving quickly.  The real defense of the course is in the greens and complexes, which preserves some challenge in the golf course.

I managed to play the course over two days so that I could play it in both directions.  While it is kind of a bummer that there isn't a full 18 to play in one day, I think the reversible format will make for some great charity/corporate shotgun events.  It really is fun playing the same greens from opposite directions, and the direction change is a lot of fun to play on.

Do they have a set schedule for reversing the 9 nines?  Each day?

I finally played here a couple of days ago and liked it, but they could do a better job with directions. I couldn't find the next tee twice during the 9 holes (can't remember if I played Azalea or Magnolia); I spent several minutes wandering around before finally figuring out where I was supposed to play from on the 9th hole. Also, on 9, I had no idea where I was supposed to play my tee shot. I finally ended up aiming at a line of small trees (dogwoods, maybe?) about 150 yards from the tee and hit it over them. Once I got to my ball it seemed like that was the correct line, which is incredibly strange. I can't remember ever playing a hole where the proper line (and really the only available line, which is why I was confused) was to hit it over some trees. There were a couple of other holes where it was hard to figure out where you were supposed to hit your tee shot, but nowhere near as egregious as 9.

Regardless, it's a fun place to play (hopefully I'll get out and play the other 9 at some point) and should be an excellent facility for Atlanta.
