I've never been able to drive the 1st green at Dornoch from the tips, but in a competition 10-15 years ago I melted one to about 10 yards short, took out my putter for safety, then proceeded to lift my head and push it into the front right bunker.  It all went downhill from there .........

No good drive goes unpunished!
(At least for me )

I have spent the last 20 minutes reading the entirety of this thread, and haven't seen anything as egregious as what I am about to relate:

Playing Pine Valley with the former club president. I pulled my approach shot to number 18 so far left, it bounced through some woods, into the parking lot, and took out the rear window of a shiny Mercedes.

Turns out the car was owned by a magazine editor that I had never met, although I was contributing to his publication at that time!

The late Jim Finnegan was on propert that day, and when I purchased a copy of his Pine Valley history book, he was clever enough to inscribe it: "great to meet you on such a smashing occasion."

How about 3 under with 3 to go at Merion in a tournament and I bogey 16 and 17 then cold top it off the 18th tee? The ball managed to hop up onto the tee pad in front of us or else I could still be there trying to get out of the quarry...and that was about 1997.

Given my time in the wilderness off the tee (hopefully now ended!), there are several that come to mind. The most recent one was on 17 at Cabot Cliffs this summer. I had had a magical afternoon as a single with no one else around me on the course and was 2 under through 16 after hitting the 16th green from the little area 20 yards behind the back tee (don't tell anyone!).

I stepped up on 17 with thoughts of breaking 70 in my head...and immediately hit a massive slice into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. I finished bogey-double and shot 73.

I don't want to complain too much as Cabot is one of my favorite places on earth and that was an amazing round regardless, but it is a great reminder that whatever skill level you are, if you get a number in your head and get out of the moment, terrible things are liable to happen.

This summer at NGLA I had a decent round going, on 10 tee the caddie says "this is the widest fairway out here, can't miss it, you should smash this" I then hit one left of the track in between 9&10 and almost in the fairway bunkers on 9  ::)

Hands up if you've hit the windmill off no.2 at NGLA?  :-[

Another............

1st tee at Oakmont, Bob Ford starting us standing on the tee watching, I'm the first to tee off and pull it straight down 9 fairway, Bob Ford puts his hand on my shoulder and says "that's actually a good angle to come in from over there, just don't hit that drive again today"  :-[

I've played Pebble and Cypress once and snapped it on 18 at Pebble and chunked 3W on 16 at Cypress.
I once hit a car on 18 at North Berwick and the ball bounced in the middle of the fairway 30 yards from the green and I still made double.
Once on #1 at TOC I sliced it right into burn, dropped and played third into burn short, dropped and got up and down for double.
Another time at #1 at TOC, I hit a drive less than 50 yards from hole and skulled it into the burn.
The worst shot I've ever hard of is a really long hitting player driving one out of bounds right on 17 at Chicago.

Sliced my tee shot into a train on #1 at Prestwick.

Was the train moving? Could be the longest drive in history of golf.

Even Titantic Thompson didn’t think of that one.

Playing TOC for the first and only time I hit a nice drive on the 17th but promptly placed my second into the Road Hole bunker. Four furious and unsuccessful slashes at the ball later I conceded the hole and hand wedged my ball onto the green. I received polite applause from several onlookers watching the (mis)proceedings while walking down the road. Always a gallery on the opening hole and finishers at St. Andrews. Did manage to regroup and win my match on the 18th. I will never forget the moment as late in the day the sun was low in the sky and the whole town was bathed in a glorious golden hue as we walked over the Swilcan Bridge and made our way to the 18th green. Made up for my ignominious attempts in the bunker.

worst and best all in the same shot ............
17th hole at Streamsong Black, short par 3, left to right tilt, mounds on the left.
Aim point left fringe, assuming a right hand bounce.
I hit a horrendous pull, the ball disappeared for a moment, then came cascading down toward the hole (40'?? +\-), winding up ;less than 12" from the hole and I guess not more than missing an ace by 2".

My opening tee shot at TPC Sawgrass was a smother pull hook that hit a tree about 40 yards off the tee and shot hard right into the pond next to the tee. It a precursor to the rest of the round...

My worst shot came on #1 of the New Course
(And TOC also)
Straight from Glasgow airport to St. Andrews.
Walked to Jubilee starter and inquired about getting a tee time.
"Oh, sorry, but all booked through tomorrow (for tournament), but try the New Course."
So walked the few feet to the New kiosk.
"If you can be on the tee in 15 minutes you can start ahead of the foursome waiting on the tee."

Pay green fees.  Run to car.  Put on golf shoes.  Grab clubs and hat.  Run to starter.  Rent pull cart.
Step onto tee for my first shot, out of breath and watched by two foursomes behind me.
Made good contact but skied it a little.  Between my gigantic hook and the right to left wind, I ended up a few feet from the 16th green of TOC.

So I got to play TOC for free!
For one shot.
