Bunkers and/or waste areas that are not maintained
« on: November 06, 2018, 08:43:39 AM »
A friend of mine recently played Pine Valley and noticed the daily use of a sand pro to maintain the bunkers. He also said with the machine entering and exiting the bunkers the edges are being ruined.

Are there many if any courses that don't maintain bunkers at least on a daily basis?

The Municipal Course on Coronado is very busy and only uses the sand pro once a week. There are 18 fairway bunkers and 24 green side bunkers. Playing mostly on the weekends you get some crap lies where twilight golfers haven’t brought the rake in with them. Certainly makes you think twice before you shout “get in the bunker”!

As Pete points out, there are lots of courses that can't afford to rake all their bunkers daily.

But of the elite courses?  Generally, they all go in and smooth out the "native areas" at least periodically.  Not sure if it's every day, though.

See Ran’s Featured Interview with Edwin Roald posted today for some interesting thoughts on bunkering, it’s purpose and functioning.

Most UK courses are not raking daily. Often twice a week is the norm though if a bunker is in a bad state greenkeepers will normally give it a quick once over. As an Assistant Pro one of my duties on a week day was to go out and rake the back nine bunkers on Wednesdays and Fridays before opening the shop.

The bunkers at my current course generally are not maintained...as a result of member indifference and/or lack of etiquette.
