Of course the only clubs interested in top 100 lists are proprietary ones. I remember going to Chart Hills (Faldo in Kent, England) their certificate for being 99/100 in GB&I was prominently displayed in a lovely frame that probably cost half a members annual subs. At two traditional clubs in Kent and Sussex the certificates were pinned to a noticeboard with a single drawing pin.

Though I've pretty well moved past chasing notches on lists, I think all of us have done it at least early on and so you can't in total sincerity eviscerate others who are trying to play all the courses on whatever list. Using lists to direct my travel is a decent part of what led me to work out what I preferred and what I disliked and build the experience and sample size to feel confident making my own decisions about the courses I most want to see from now on.


But I would say a few things in relation to this thread:


* I don't buy David Davis' contention that "I think it's totally reasonable to want to play the entire list you are voting on (creating). After all how do you really know what should, and should not be on the list unless you see it." That would only be so if you were on a quest to play every single candidate for inclusion on the list. Simply playing the 100 that got listed won't tell you whether all of the 100 courses should or shouldn't be on there.

Fine post and in particular your point about playing courses on a list to determine top 100. I've long thought that a lot of these lists are self-perpetuating for that very reason.

FWIW - the book I used as a guide for so many years was Golf World's top 1000 in GB&I. Within that it had various top 100 lists including best value etc but what guided me was the basic rating out of 5 together with various actual comments from reviewers.

I do not have the desire or time to pursue playing a 100 course list, but if I did I would pick the Golfweek Classic Next Hundred.  I have liked all of the courses I have played on it, and it seems a collection of worthy, enjoyable courses.  Someone else made the same observation on a different thread, and it resonated.

I have/had the vague notion that I might someday play the Top 100 public courses in the US, but as the climate change situation keeps getting worse, I've thought twice before travelling over the past 10 years because of the carbon emissions. I haven't eliminated it, but just probably slowed it down. I don't even like to tell people how many courses I've played, or where I've been to and played, since it might get motivate them to travel more.

I find this thread very interesting and insightful, primarily because lately I've been thinking it's time to retire the travel bag.  The only remaining maybe is a trip to Ireland.  Otherwise, I'm willing to leave everything else undone.  I've been beyond blessed.

My job has had me in airports all my life. I enjoy golf at home and will golf travel with or to see friends which fortunately takes me to plenty of places on top lists. As my body allows, I always feel the pull to go back to St. Andrews. I would rather know some places like the Old Course well and the trade off is I won't see some wonderful places. The all you can eat buffet can make you miserable.
