I see many scraggly trees at Sand Valley.

 It seems like everyone is posting photos of this new course. I see some pretty ugly trees.

Mike,
   I played there last weekend and as I recall very few trees come into play on the course. On 12 you have the option to challenge a lone centerline tree to cut off yardage . The driving corridors are 60-100yds wide- not often do trees come into play. There are many areas of  dense pine trees which as I understand covered the property prior to course construction.

The property was apparently basically covered with these low quality scraggy trees before construction started

Those are jack pines.  When I was there, they told me that they are trying to eradicate pines(white or red pines) planted by the paper companies years ago, because they aren't natives, leaving only the scraggly looking ones to be environmentally sensitive to the site.

Plus they have a few cactus which we were told are endogenous to the area- they are itty bitty and not noticeable without the caddies pointing them out.

The larger Jack Pines that are native to the area do not look great, over time the wind will take care of them. They were saved when the Red Pines were removed. The smaller jack pines are beautiful trees, we have quite a few nice ones on the new par 3 course. There are also plenty of Oak trees onsite that are very nice.

Having been to Sand Valley twice in the last year, all I'd offer is that the "scraggly" trees may be "ugly" (though I find it hard to dismiss any living thing out of hand on aesthetics...call me a hippie) in photos, but they are a part of the unique landscape that the course and resort occupy. I think if the look of some of the trees keeps someone from visiting, I'd suggest that person may be assigning too much significance to those trees re: the total experience.

I'm heading down there for the first time next weekend for a few days of golf. Can't wait!


I have been accused of being a tree hater in the past but I can't say I've noticed them on an individual level in any of the photos I've seen so far.
