Wisconsin, Pine Hills: Sheboygan (Smead)
« on: May 23, 2017, 01:08:31 PM »
Two golf architects told me this is an interesting course with  quite a bit of " distinct  Langford- like   features".

 Has anyone played here ?

Thanks  !

Mark:

I played it ages ago, at the suggestion of the guys who worked at Kohler [Blackwolf Run].  It's on a nice piece of rolling ground.  I don't remember the features and would not have recognized Langford's work 30 years ago, but it was the ground that stood out.  It was heavily treed as you might expect from a course named Pine Hills.

The architect was an associate of L&M. The routing is really good over some wonderful terrain. And the L&M scale is evident around the greens but the slopes are not as steep. I am not sure if the bunkers were the originals when I played four years ago. In either case, I think those have been remodeled since. If I had the choice between playing Pine Hills or Blackwolf Run, I would rather play Pine Hills.

I played it (with Kye Goalby) last September, and we both really liked it...

Pretty much in tact, though the third has become the first, the second as the second and the first as the fire, and the sixth has been re-routed to accommodate a larger practice range (the original green sits by the second tee.)

A really cool and varied property, with the looping river well used though the middle of the routing. Some interesting elevation change, and the scale of features to match. A couple of particularly wild, Langford-esq green complexes...It seems like Smead wasn't afraid to step-out of his masters shoes!

Horrible light, but the contrasting scales of 8-9-10, working up to and away from the clubhouse:

The brilliant 12th green, crafted out of one last roll:

The high river bank chasing finisher would be beauty if they cleared all the trees on its daring inside.

(A "Doak 6" if we are scoring!?)

Is it true that Ron Forse is doing some work here?

I have heard he is very high on the golf course.
It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.
