Dublin area recommendations
« on: May 03, 2017, 07:19:13 PM »
Going to a wedding and staying near Dublin in a few months.  Just looking for some thoughts on courses in the area for 2 rounds.  Considering Portmarnock Golf Club, Portmarnock Golf Links, The K Club Ryder Cup Course, Royal Dublin, The Island Golf Club and County Louth.  Thanks in advance.

If I was going to play two of those, I'd pick The Island [which I've never actually played] and County Louth.  The Island is the most dramatic of the courses; County Louth has the best architecture.

But it's not much farther to drive up to Royal County Down, and if you are not traveling alone, your significant other will love the scenery up there.

Portmarnock GC was the 1st links course I ever played in GB&I (or anywhere else for that matter). You could not go wrong playing there.

Royal County Down is a great course, but I am guessing the drive time from central Dublin is at least 90 minutes each way.

Hard to believe 33 years have passed since I played both those courses.

I think Portmarnock is magnificent. If it were on the other side of the Irish Sea it'd have been an Open course for a long time.

I really like Royal Dublin, but the Island is more dramatic and probably better overall.

County Louth is just lovely from start to finish.

The Portmarnock Hotel course loses out by comparison to the old course next door, but it is very strong work by Stan Eby. As long as you stick to the links and avoid the K Club there are no bad choices here.

Those are two great choices-I'd add Layton and Bettystown if time for 36 on the Louth day.
The Island is very difficult between towering dunes, deep rough and greens that feed away.
It's been 20 years since I played Baltray (Louth)
Portmarnock would be my next choice-or Corballis if looking for a 36 hole day near the Island

Fwiw compared to the experts who have weighed in already, The Island Club was one of my wife's and my favorite golfing experiences in Ireland. The dunes and greens are dramatic and challenging. It was very fair plus because us Americans do not have it on the bucket list, we saw less than two other foursomes on the course. I put it below Lahinch but ahead of Ballybunion and Waterville.
