Yes I think Sweetens is better. Not by a lot though. I love the movement and the texture at Sweetens. It adds much to the experiance. Whittinsville has got some great holes 2, 6 & 9 but the flow is better at Sweetens.

Just an off the Wall thought from someone who has never set foot on the property...

Does the course get a bit more love than deserved BECAUSE it is a 9 hole course?

Would the addition of a second nine of equal quality make it a US/World Top 100 course?

Just curious.

Greg,

I'd say it gets less love being a 9 holer.

That surely could be true but I think that is exactly the case for the Dunes Club in New Buffalo Michigan. Don't get me wrong. I love everything about it but the novelty of being a walking only nine-holer adds to its allure and distinctiveness. The informal setting, tiny clubhouse and non pro staff cinches the deal. I don't mean to demean it in any way but I think it's a little paradoxical to compare it to or rank it against 18 hole courses.

It's hard to make such comparisons.  When you build a nine hole course you only have to build the best nine holes ... the chances of having to include a stinker are greatly reduced.

But that doesn't mean that nine-holers should be banished from the rankings.  Prairie Dunes was a great nine, added a second nine of lesser quality, and is still high in the rankings, based mostly on the quality of the original nine.  So why shouldn't it have been in the rankings when it was only those holes?

Was Prairie Dunes highly rated as a nine-holer?  Did they rate back then?  PD is in my Top Ten and the first nine by Perry are beyond special. I can hardly imagine...

Terry:

It was a simpler time.  There were no rankings back then.  Prairie Dunes was somehow widely known as "the best nine hole course in America," but I don't know how widely, or how.

I don't know if 9 holers are knocked down a peg because they are 9 holers.  To me it makes no difference.  A course is a course.  If we are going to make stipulations about the number of holes how is it reasonable to compare sandy site courses to non-sandy site courses...etc...etc...etc.  Sometimes people overthink this shit. I would love to see more varied number of hole courses...golf needs them.  I often felt that 14 holes is a better number for me.
