Hawtree on Colt

Has anyone read Hawtree's book on Colt and his various partners (which include MacK and Allison)? Is it worth buying?

Yes it's worth buying.  Just don't expect the definitive book or good photos.

I am only familiar with Some Essays on Golf Course Architecture (Colt, Alison, Hawtree, and Cornish).  It is a good book with some nice drawings and poor photographs.  

I am looking for Aspects of Golf Course Architecture  (Grant Books) and Colt and Co:  Golf Course Architects.  This is a   biographical study of Colt, Alison, Morrison (no relation) and Mackenzie by FW Hawtree (CAmbuc Archive).  Both are out of print and I remain unsuccessful in locating any.  I may call Grant and see what he can do.

Bob, when are you coming up for parent's day?  Save some time for golf.

I am looking at Hawtree's "Colt and Co." It's a first edition, so it is a little pricey. Email me if you might be interested. I will give you the details.

Parents' weekend is 10/24 - 26. My daughter's goal is to minimize the number of her friends that actually meet me, so she asked me to play as much golf as possible that weekend. ;) Thus things are looking good for a round. Will contact you with details.

Pricey 1st edition, huh?  Why don't we split the purchase price, we'll keep the book at my house and you can read it every parent's weekend for the next 4 years (more if your daughter goes to graduate school)?  Please email me the price, but if you are passing on it chances are real high that I will as well.

I hope your daughter is enjoying her freshman year in the Quaker City.  I'm glad she's made some friends, good thing she wants you to play some golf.  Glad to oblige her wishes.  We'll look forward to your visit.

There's only one edition of Colt and Co.  I think all 1000 are signed too.  Mine was a nice one, until I dropped it in the bath.

What's the matter with you dropping that book in the bath? It takes a very experienced man to know how to read in the bath correctly. But you do have somewhat of a headstart seeing as you're English!  ;)

Rhod McEwan had a copy of Colt & Co. the last time I checked and it is a bit pricey but not outrageous for such a unique book.  Although I do know some people that are disappointed by it, I enjoyed the book, especially some of the letters between the three.

It was at least 4 years ago when I purchased a copy of Colt & Co. from Grant so I don't know if they have any more or not.  Bud's right, there were 1000 copies printed, all signed by Hawtree.  It also has a nice leaflet in the back with all of the designs by Colt, MacKenzie, and Alison.
