Links Magazine-Pacific Dunes vs. Pebble
« on: August 28, 2003, 09:05:21 AM »
I am not sure if anyone has recieved their Links Magazine for Sep/Oct.  The cover is Pacific Dunes with an article by George Peper.  He traveled to Pebble for two rounds of golf and then to Pacific Dunes for two rounds of golf to compare the two of them head to head.  He broke down the winning characteristics of each course by "bang for the buck, condition, shotmaker's paradise, putter's paradise,.."  etc..

It is an interesting read.

From the article:
" Part of me loves the simple, hang-your-coat-on-a-hook-and-go-play atmosphere of Bandon Dunes, but I'm afraid I also have a taste for foie gras and fine Chardonnay. "

So - what does this have to do with golf?

The article reminds me why I canceled Links mag - too much into the jet-set lifestyle and not enough into the sport we love.

I also didn't like his sexist comment about taking your wife to Pebble because there's so much to do there.  My wife (God bless her!) visited Bandon with me in 2001, and can't stop talking about it till this day.  Plenty of wives are golfers, and mine is my best golfing buddy to boot!

All I know is that we played with a very nice gentleman who drove his motorcycle up from the Pebble Beach area where he lived with his dad.  Why?  Because he preferred Pacific Dunes.

Dan,

Don't knock George Peper for an innocuous comment about his wife, I am sure it was done with some poetic license. Libby Peper is a well known and accomplished artist with an uncanny ability to bring out the salient features of green complexes that you see in many golf tomes. She would have been at Bandon in a shot had the opportunity arisen.

Peper is as much a purist as anyone in the GCA and should not be sold short

My favorite sidebar was the hole-by-hole match play comparison between the two courses -- prefaced by:

"This is probably the most meaningless way of comparing the two courses -- but what the heck, it's fun."

Yes, there are some non-golf tidbits in the article ... and I should say I think Bandon Dunes always gets a bum rap in those, the food is terrific ... but there is a lot of detail about the two courses without getting into the analysis of "shot values and strategic integrities," for which he would undoubtedly be corrected by everyone who participates here.

I've known George Peper since I was 19, but this is the first time he's played one of my courses ... he never wanted to put himself on the spot of having to review them to me.  Maybe he'll go see some of my other work now.
