Dawson is the paid chief executive of the R&A working to the Chairman and various committees. To think he sits in his office twiddling with plans and moving a bunker here or there is rather naive. I'm sure many a CEO has had to present on things he doesn't agree with but that's part of the job.

Yet another guy who says Dawson's simply a well-intentioned patsy.  Makes me want to send him a hallmark card and a box of chocolates.

Jud T,

To what level do you think he micro manages ?

I have no idea, but the phrase "The buck stops here" seems relevant.  Even if he was simply a bumbling administrator, history will remember him as the guy who was in charge when they drew a mustache on the Mona Lisa.  Perhaps the George Bush of the R&A, if you will.

I have no idea,

What do you mean that you "have no idea" ?

Let me rephrase the question.
To what level do you think a CEO should drill down and micro manage ?

but the phrase "The buck stops here" seems relevant.

How about the management concept of delegating to subordinates and not second guessing them ?

Perhaps you're living in another decade.
So if someone is a bumbling administrator, and "the buck stops here", then you think that Obama should be held directly accountable for the IRS scandal and the Benghazi tragedy, just like you demand that Dawson be held accountable for TOC.

Ultimately, yes.  They happened on his watch.  Of course I'm not sure which has gone further beyond it's 15 minutes of fame-  Benghazi or the lost Malaysian Airliner.

And yet the 15 minutes of fame over the changes to TOC hasn't run out yet? But I suppose a golf course is more important in the long run than lives.

Brian,

Someone is murdered every night in Chicago.  I don't see CNN or Fox giving it nonstop coverage for months on end.  This is a Golf Architecture website.  Some of us, including many prominent in the industry, think changing contours to the Old Course is close to sacrilege.  Others see it as simply part of a continuum of updated tournament venues to challenge the best in the world.  Unfortunately, no amount of online bickering is going to change anyone's view significantly on this.

You're right. We ought not bring politics into it. But I think we've moved on from Bush. For the record, Columbus is developing a pretty impressive homicide rate.

Getting back to architecture, I think that some things are best left alone, such as TOC. But if you accept that TOC should never be touched, then where do you draw the line? You could make the same argument that any renovation to any course inappropriate.

Brian,

I think you have to ask, WHY is TOC being touched ?   What's the cause, not the result ?
