Morfontaine - what a joy!
« on: October 27, 2008, 12:50:02 PM »
I was fortunate enough to play Morfontaine last week in spectacular weather, and what a course it is. It reminds me of a mix of several of the courses in and around London, such as Swinley Forest, The Berkshire, St George's Hill and Sunningdale.

The greens had been hollow tined, which was a shame, and I would love to see them when they were at full speed at the height of summer.

Particular highlights for me were the drive through the chute of trees on 5 and 9, the incredible green complex on 10, the wonderful par 3 13th with the tree blocking the multi-tiered green, the "frog" or "snake" rock in the fairway on 14 and the green complex on 17.

As expected, the course was deserted.

I have some pictures which I will try to upload in due course, but if you ever get a chance to play there then you should jump at the chance.

Tom--

I'm glad you were able to get over to see Morfontaine.  Did you play the Valliere and if you did, how about those greens as a change of pace from the main course?  The greens on 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8 are all great.

Agree with everything you said.  Is the new 12th green looking the remaining greens now?  It was very new when I visited last year and still a bit thin.

My favorite holes on the main course are 7 and 8, both great driving holes with interesting greens.

Brian,

I can't speak to the comparison's to Sunningdale or Swinley Forest, but Morfontaine is beyond special to me.  It was the highlight of 2013 for me.  The added asset of the Valliere Course makes it an amazing 27 holes.  There are several of the most unique greens I have ever seen on the Valliere.  The 1st, 3rd, 4th and 7th greens are beyond fantastic.  The main course is quite memorable as well.  I loved the par 3's, especially the 2nd and 4th, that possess some seriously intricate bunkering, with the 17th being an exception for me.  The false front on the 10th is spectacular.  There is some very interesting bunkers throughout the course.  It felt very intimate to me all around and I look forward to getting back for another visit.  I think it is a great members course as there are a few blind drives on doglegs that would become more apparent after several plays.  They also have a lovely intimate clubhouse with typically great french cuisine.

Nice play! A friend played their last fall and showed me pics. Like you it reminded me of Swinley. I believe it's Tom Simpson and I have seen a few of his courses and hope to play some. They look like a lot of fun and in great settings.
