In my mind as I browsed our merchandise I'm thinking "This guy couldn't par the hole 5 times if we gave him 10 tries, and he's worried about making it too easy."

And for the record, my wager is that the scoring average on that hole doesn't change at all after the trees come out. They're in play, but no worse than the awful downhill lie just beyond them that they dissuade players from hitting toward currently.

My favorite was the member at Crystal Downs who wanted to lengthen the silver tee on the 11th hole by five yards so there'd be more tee space.

The professional busted him -- he really wanted to lengthen the hole because the length was between clubs for the guy.

the par 3?  with the brutal green?  how often does he hit an hold it now?  and he wants to go back a club?

You mean between his 195 yard 5-wood and his 197 yard 4-wood?  8)

I usually think less bunkers will make courses better.

At ny first meeting as a member of the Greens committee, we went throught the agenda, then got to "member comments."  On our Donald Ross course, the 4th is a great par 4 with a fairway that cants right to left, a fwy bunker at about 285 out on the right side, and a creek down the left side, about 25 yards away from the fairway.   I personally think it is one of the better holes on the course.  The comment was it is a terrible hole, and we should put in a bunker all the way down the left side so this guy's ball would no longer go in the creek.  One of the guys on the committee responded, tell him to learn how to hit a fade into the fairway.  I could not believe it.

Another favorite was after we renovated our other course, the grounds crew put some nice landscaping around the perimeter.  On one hole, behind the green -- and on the other side of the cart path that circles around the green and is generally out of play, they placed pretty rose bushes.  The member wanted the bushes removed because he had gotten stuck by a thorn retrieving his ball -- and he was allergic to roses.

It was an eye-opening experience.

When I attended my first green committee meeting I was fired up.  I had done a bunch of research regarding the role of a committee and my head was full of ideas about how we could improve our course through tree removal.

We received a nice report from the superintendent about how the course came through the winter, his maintenance standards, his current projects and his equipment needs.  The committee then spent a half hour arguing about whether cart towels should be hung on the rear supports for the roof or on the shelf in front of the player.

I bided my time until I could build enough relationships to have some influence.

As a former Grounds Chair, a few of my buddies think I still have influence... So they tell me we should build a stone wall around our fake liner pond, remove the weeds (natural grasses/plant buffer to keep people from walking near the edge, causing the liner to collapse...) and plant flowers along one side. I say sure, we'll make them pansies and they can do the weeding.

Bill,

I hope I helped dispel some of those suggestions, which I witnessed  ;D

Greg and Jason,

Volunteer to sit in on a meeting of the House Committee and sit back and enjoy the conversation while they discuss the colour and softness of the toilet paper, the pouring ability of the teapots and whether or not to have sugar in cubes! It'll make your time spent on the Green Committee almost seem worthwhile!!!! Good luck and don't let them grind you down.

Reduce water use by at least 50%; trim every tree over 50 years old so there's sun on the turf half the day and cut down the rest.
