The subject says it all!

And this picture is really worth more than a thousand words.  More on that later.

I can only say Ted Ray and Harry Vardon, the other three I don't know. Prestwick maybe the 1914 Open championship.
A combination of whats good for golf and good for turf.
The Players Club, Cumberwell Park, The Kendleshire, Oake Manor, Dainton Park, Forest Hills, Erlestoke, St Cleres.

Ray and Vardon are correct.  Not Prestwick.

Jock Hutchinson could be first on left, I suppose its Willie McFarlane era too so yes it could be USA.... I was think UK and that backdrop was Prestwick. Anything to do with Vardons exhibition at East Lake and Bobby Jones mentor Stewart?

Good names Jock and Willie, but neither are present in that pic!

I'm guessing this was taken as part of the Vardon/Ray tour of 1913 or their later tour in 1920.

Any chance A.W. is in this photo and it was taken at Shawnee?

That is McDermott on the right. This is taken at Shawnee CC after McDermott's victory in the Shawnee Open. Tillinhast told the story of his verbal faux pas. I forget the specifics but it is in Tales From the Links.

So Shawnee on Delaware
Vardon, Ray, ? , Alex Smith, McDermott?
Who is in the middle?

I think Alex Smith is in the middle. Is that Cyril Tolley on the left of the picture?

Alex Smith is in the middle, but Wilfred Reid is on the left.

Tilly took this photo about 15 minutes after the 'incident'.  Perhaps the gap between JMac and the others makes sense.

As I said in the initial post, that picture is worth a thousand words, or more.

The story of John McDermott is a fascinating one and fellow GCAer John Burnes continues to vigorously research him.  JMac is still the youngest winner in US Open history.

That picture is part of a article penned by Tillinghast for the April 23, 1916 edition of the Philadelphia Record newspaper.  The entire article is a great read and is below.
