Golf.com List of 50 Best Golf Holes in the US
« on: December 04, 2013, 12:49:21 PM »
In this morning's edition of Golf.com is a list of the 50 best US golf holes.  No major surprises.
Seems like they are focused on beauty more than shot values, but that is not a surprise.
Also, there seem to be a lot of 18th holes--more than would be called for from a random sample.

A little surprised Five Farms #6 or #14 didn't make the list.

The list didnt have many surprises except for the placement of the particular holes. The creators of the list clearly had a bias towards view and the ocean as opposed to just great golf holes. I wasnt surprised by 17 at Sawgrass being in the top 10 but it is crazy to have that hole rated anyplace near the top. Yale 9 was rated around 40 (it should be much much higher) and I don't remember seeing Pine Valley #5 on the list which was strange. (alhtough you could probably put 4 or 5 holes from Pine Valley in the top 50)

Nice collection, but I'd rather see the best hole from each of the Top 100 courses in the US.  In that way, you wouldn't have multiple entries from a number of courses, like Pebble, Merion, Augusta, etc.  I also found it irritating that they picked a hole from Sand Hills, but showed a photo of a different hole.

How did they get that intimate shot of the 9th at Maidstone?

Why does the picture of the 17th at Congressional actually feature the 18th?

Great to see the 13th at Pacific Dunes so high up on the list. The recent threads on first visits to Bandon got me thinking about what my favorite hole on the property is and #13 at PD might be it.

Thanks Craig - silly me - I went to golf.com and searched from there. That was my first mistake.

It's an interesting list. I don't think #1 is a surprise. I agree with Terry in that I think that it would make for a more interesting list if it were one hole per course allowed. I also can't help wondering if Augusta and TPC Sawgrass did better than they otherwise might from being on TV every year. Same with Muirfield Village. As it is, I would probably have put a few more Pine Valley holes in there. 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 all spring to mind, along with 10 and 16. That might be a little excessive though.

Some holes seem to be in there due to the part they played in golf history instead of merit, and on courses that host professional tournaments you don't get so see many holes from the front 9 on TV. Plus obviously most architects try to do something memorable for the 18th hole since this is the last memory you take home from the course.

They picked #18 at Olympic, which I don't think is the best hole on that course.  #7 is better IMO, by a fair amount.

Anyone know anything about the criteria?

I mean sure I love the #1 hole as much as the next guy, happy to take my bogey and move on with wind against. However, being a brut a best hole does not make on many of those holes they make that kind of statement.

Thus I'd guess playability (for all levels) might not be one of their criteria. Difficulty on the other hand is. Maybe aesthetic beauty? Perhaps number of bunkers or hazards is key. Certainly length as well. Long = better. Otherwise 15 at Cypress might be the best, arguably the most beautiful on the planet.

Historic significance clearly weighs very high as well.
