Bandon -- first impressions
« on: December 02, 2013, 05:33:26 PM »
Just got back from my Bandon debut.  These courses have been discussed at length obviously on many great threads.  I won't pretend to offer anything new here, but will share my first impressions after playing each course for the first time.

At the outset, allow me to hedge my bets and state up front that I loved every course.  The entire experience totally lived up to the hype (which was considerable) and I can't wait to get back.  On my own scale of rating courses, they are all a 10.  Any one of them would be an elite destination club on their own in my opinion.

If forced to rank them, I would go with the following:
(1) Old Mac
(2) Bandon
(3) Trails
(4) Pac Dunes

I'd also add that the Preserve is an unbelievable par 3 course, certainly the best I've ever played, and for me more enjoyable than many full length 18 hole courses.

Other macro-level observations:

*** I think the original course has been hugely underrated following all the hype that accompanied the newer courses at the resort -- I played the original last (and best) so perhaps this is influencing my opinion, but I don't think so.  #4 through #6 was my favorite sequence of holes at the entire resort, and I found the tee shot at #16 to be the best single shot opportunity on any of the courses.

*** With the opportunity to play Old Mac twice, I realized my initial impression of not enjoying the holes on the other side of the hill (#1, #2, #17, #18) as much as the bulk of the course was wrong.  Upon a second round, really impressed with how the first two holes slowly build up the anticipation for the tee shot at #3, and like how the final two holes wind down the round following #15 and #16, which I felt were taxing but rewarding holes to play.

*** Old Mac for me offered the two best views I've ever experienced on a golf course.  First when you walk over the hill at the top of the #3 fairway and see the entire course spread out before you.  Second, when you reach the top of the hill at #7 and look out over the ocean and back down at the rest of the course.  Both holes provided a great reward for trudging up the hills.

*** Is there a better snack shop location in the world than the stand between #7 and #8 at Old Mac?  I honestly think I want to quit my job and go work there all day.

*** Really don't understand why Trails is maligned by some.  Loved the short but diabolical par 4s, loved the par 3s, and thought it was a great "break" from the ocean courses.  It also reminded me of the woodsy and hilly midwestern courses that I grew up playing on, so perhaps I'm biased.  I didn't think this course was as strong as places like Kingsley or Forest Dunes or Wolf Run, but it's all relative -- I still loved this course.

*** I need to play Pac Dunes again.  I feel like I'm severely underrating this course.  It was the first course I played upon arriving at the resort, and maybe I was so blown away by everything that I couldn't settle in and truly appreciate it.  To be clear, I thought it was a great course, but between the two Doak courses on the property I'd vote for Old Mac, which might be my all time favorite golf experience as the memory of playing it twice continues to sink in.

Overall, my primary takeaway is that I left the resort thinking that I need to make more money to facilitate trips there every year.  Can't wait to get back.

I agree.  Played there in September. Cannot wait to return.  It is heavenly.
Haven't played since yesterday, not playing until tomorrow, hardly playing at all!

Matthew,

I had similar impressions on my visit there last November.  I like the original course as well.  My favorite place on the property is the 16th green/17th tee-- although climbing the hill on #3 at Old Mac is a VERY close second.

I think Trails gets the short end of the stick by some because of the lack of ocean front views compared to the others, but the dunes-forest-dunes transition is wonderful.  Also, #14 at Trails seems to be a sticking point for some.  (After a year, I'm still on the fence about it.)  What did you think about it?

Every time I try and rank the courses in my head, I get a different combination.

Glad you had a good time.

Jordan, I'm a huge fan of #14 at Trails.  #13 as well for that matter. In fact, my favorite holes there are probably the most frequently criticized.  Not sure if that makes me a poor evaluator of golf courses or simply a contrarian, but I really enjoyed those holes.  Though I am definitely one of those golfers who judges their round by the number of good holes and good shots I have, and discounts their bad holes, so perhaps my personality is well suited to surviving Trails.  Either way I was a big fan. If Bandon adds additional courses long term I'd hope to see one more through the woods.

I'd rank my Bandon experience among my favorite golf trips of all time and that's with a trip to Pebble, a tour through Northern Ireland and four months in Scotland (granted during those 4 months I had to go to class a few times too).  My hope is for many more repeat trips to come.  With the additional courses in the plans, it's a no brainer.

Matthew,
Quick few questions, Why play Pacific first?  I would think you would want to get a round under your belt before tackeling that course.
Did you notice a round where you played particularly better and do you think that effected your rating?
The reason I ask I've noticed on my annual trips I tend to skew my better ball striking rounds as more enjoyable courses.  My playing partners do the same.
Thanks for the reviews, I have yet to make that trip.

Good questions. Pacific was the first round simply due to course availability. I didn't give too much thought -- if any -- to the order in which the courses would be played, as I was equally excited to play all of them.  But I think you're absolutely right that playing Pac Dunes first -- followed by four subsequent rounds at the other three courses -- has lessened its impact in my mind, and when going back to look at my photos from Pac Dunes, I realized I was probably underestimating how much I enjoyed it.  As for the skewing of course ratings, I would say my ratings would be more biased by which I played more recently as opposed to which I played better (as I tend to be equally average on all courses!). But in this case, my best play did come on the original Bandon and Old Mac, which I would rate the highest.

Your questions got me thinking about whether I would suggest a certain order to playing the courses in for a first-time visitor.  If you are able to fit in 6 rounds I'd go with the following:

1.  Bandon Dunes
2.  Pacific Dunes
3.  Old Macdonald
4.  Bandon Trails (in order for the change of pace feel of this course to pay off you need to maximize your ocean exposure first)
5.  Old Macdonald (the course is incredibly fun on the first round, but only gets better with repeat play -- you'll want to play this twice)
6.  Bandon/Pacific (you'll want to end your trip with a repeat round at one of the original cliff-top courses -- it feels wrong to end a visit any other way)

In response to the snack shop question, I'd go with the snack shop at Turnberry-Ailsa.

Matt:

You're doing it wrong.

The ultimate 3 day schedule at Bandon (summer time):

Day 1 - AM - Old Mac, PM - Bandon Trails, 3rd Round Free - Bandon Dunes

Day 2 - AM - Pacific Dunes, PM - Old Mac, 3rd Round Free - Bandon Dunes

Day 3 - AM - Bandon Trails, PM - Pacific Dunes, 3rd Round - The Preserve

You play each course (other than BD) in the morning and the afternoon.  You get BD for two sunset rounds, meaning you're probably standing on 16/17 at the optimal time both days.  I find OM to be the most forgiving course for those still in the warm up phase, so it should be the starter for the trip.  On the third day, the respite of playing The Preserve may be just what your tired dogs need.

So how much longer are the days in the summer?  Expecting to play 36 during the winter season was a tall task...we were only able to do it once with the frost delays.  Also how is the pace of play during the summer?  Save for one very long round at Old Mac, we didn't play a single round in over 4 hours

I'd probably add in an extra round on the Preserve.  That was definitely a highlight of my trip and I'm glad we didn't pass it up

There are 15 to 16 hours of sunlight in June.  Some people try to get four rounds in.

the Summer Solstice event on the 21st of June gets you 4 rounds, one on each course starting at 5:25 am and finishing around 8:15 pm...

Okay, this definitely needs to be a priority for me in the next couple years.  Even if it's just a 1 day trip, this is happening.

Matthew, I applaud your motivation, but please, give yourself enough time to play plenty of golf.  By the way, winter rates are 1/3 the summer rates, and you won't need your goretex more than one day or two out of seven.
