Stumbled across this work from 1894. It can be accessed by doing a Google search for the title in Google Books (or from this link, if it works:

The book has a series of descriptions of the various Scottish courses existing at the time, including some great old routing maps. They'd be a great addition to Ed Oden's thread (if they haven't already been added).
Here's the write-up for Hamilton, which contains some sage advice for dealing with unruly guests:
"This course is situated in Barmichael Field, within the grounds of Hamilton Palace. In case the golfer comes across any of the famed wild cattle he is recommended to put his head between his legs and stare at them. This is too much for the animal's gravity, and they at once go away."
