GCAofTD - #4 - Horace Rawlins New
« on: August 29, 2012, 01:19:54 PM »
An Englishman by birth, Rawlins was an assistant pro at Newport when he won the first U.S. Open at the age of 21.  He would later go on to serve as the head pro for Springhaven, the site of the first job I was fired from (busboy) and a course featured in my personal Greatest Courses timeline.

Rawlins was also responsible for laying out several early courses.

Sadaquada (NY) (1895) - (possibly a redo of holes laid out by Willie Park)
Wa-No-Ka (NY (1896)
CC of Lakewood (NJ) (1897)
On-Da-Wa (VT) (1899)

There has been some speculation that Rawlins helped Ida Dixon at Springhaven.  Cornish and Whitten make the claim that Dixon was the first woman architect in the U.S., but there are records of a "Miss Light" laying out a course called Coghar Links (sp?) in Nebraska some time prior to 1900.

As always, any updates or additions are encouraged.

"As much as we have learned about the history of golf architecture in the last ten plus years, I'm convinced we have only scratched the surface."  A GCA Poster

"There's the golf hole; play it any way you please." Donald Ross
