The Steamshovel in Golf Course Construction
« on: August 07, 2012, 09:48:34 AM »
I was wondering if anyone had any information regarding the use of the steamshovel in golf course construction. I know that Banks made a name (and nickname) for himself because of his love of the machine and that his use of it in construction was a relatively new development at the time. However, does anyone know when the steamshovel's use became common in golf course construction? Was Banks one of the only architects to use the steamshovel in the mid to late 1920's?

Any guidance would be appreciated!

David ,

Mark Chalfant's article on William Langford, somewhere here  on GCA, mentions William Langford and his use of a steamshovel.  I know Langford's West Bend CC website has a mention of steamshovel use by Langford on their front nine as well.

I recall seeing a photo of my dad during the construction of St George's in Toronto in the 1920s.  One had a "steam shovel" in it, and one picture had a team of horses (box scraper?).
