12th at Garden City
« on: May 31, 2012, 02:40:31 PM »
Could someone please post before and after pictures of the 12th at Garden City. I know that many decry the loss of the old 12th but I am unfamiliar about the specifics and have not been able to find any pictures through the search function. Thanks in advance.

I don't have pictures, but someone may well link old discussions that included pictures.  It has been about 6-12 months since last discussed(about once a year here).  Good to bring it up again.  Last I heard the club had a committee studying it.  They should do more than study.  GCGC, 17 holes from Walter Travis and one hole from some modern day dude and it doesn't fit the Travis look.
It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

Here is a link to a thread that shows an old aerial photo. I know there are other pictures on other threads but this should give you a general idea of the hole.

Tom - thanks, that's a start. Can't wait to see others that will give me a better feel for what was there.

Jay,

The 12th hole at Garden City was altered in the 1960's by RTJ at the request of the club.

I've been lobbying for over ten years to have the hole restored.

Begining in late September, early October, after the club championship, the restoration project will begin.

Patrick,

That is fantastic news!

Is doak restoring the hole, or someone else?
It was quite a unique hole, is a true restoration on the cards or will it be more of a hole that is inspired by the original hole with an eye to making it fit in with the other holes on the course?

Would you prefer a true restoration or a redesign inspired by the original?
Ask not what GolfClubAtlas can do for you; ask what you can do for GolfClubAtlas.

Tom Doak, who has been the club's consulting architect for decades.

I think there's a desire to replicate the original to a great degree.

Obviously a true restoration would be preferable.

The problem is the mounds.
Initially it was agreed that the mounds would not be within the putting surface due to maintainance issues.

Stay tuned.

I have not heard a confirmed timetable from the club yet for doing the work, but, Jim Urbina and I have a proposal in to restore the green to its original form.

The way we have left it with the club is that we hope to be able to restore the mounds to their original height, as part of the putting surface, but we will have to work with the superintendent Dave Pugh to determine whether the mounds can be properly maintained as part of the green.  We will then decide whether it's necessary to alter the mounds to get them to green height, or to keep the mounds and perhaps have them at collar height instead.  Talk is cheap on this subject, I don't think any of us knows for sure what will work until we've built it in 3-D.
