Els4Autism - Some Good Courses Included
« on: February 20, 2012, 12:48:06 PM »
As many of you know, Ernie Els has two sons who have Autism.  His foundation, Els4Autism, last year launched a nationwide golf tournament, with regional qualifiers (and top fundraisers) moving on to the finals in Las Vegas, where Ernie and Lisl serve as hosts.

This year the tournament has expanded dramatically.  We are hosting a regional here at Colorado Golf Club, and I thought some of you might be interested in the list of courses that will be hosting events.  Some pretty good ones in there...

Tom,

Thanks for this.

I was unaware that Ernie Els had a son who was autistic - but as someone who has Asperger's and is a father of a son who is moderate to severe autistic it is great that a high profile sportsperson is raising people's awareness to this hidden disability.

It's a pity that there no events or a similar tournament in the UK.

Cheers,

Neil.

Tom,

Thanks for the link, I'll try to make the event at the Pulpit.
Autism is more common than people think.

I commend you for supporting this.

Agreed, I coached for Special Olympics for 5 years, it's one of the best things I've ever done with my life.

Thanks for posting this. We have a group from my son's program in NYC www.snacknyc.com that will be playing Rockrimmon CC on Monday August 6th.

We will probably do a group Sunday afternoon at Yale if anyone is interested. Waiting to hear back from The Els Foundation, and again, thanks for posting this.

PS. I have never played Rockrimmon, but it has been on the list as I bike past it often. RTJ lovefest to follow!!  ;)

Sam-That is great to hear. I know that Chip Gaskins has also done some great things with The Special Olympics.

Thanks, I was honored in 2001, I was the local Special Olympics Volunteer of the Year and won a very nice scholarship for college. If anyone has never done work with them I highly recommend it, I wish my schedule was a little more consistent so I could do it more often.

I agree, Sam.  I was a volunteer for a number of years as my wife worked closely with Special Olympics, and helped out with golf, basketball and bowling.  It was truly one of the most rewarding times of my life.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. It is a very worthy way for us to give a little back to our communities and help some great people.

Neil - I know that the organizers are intending to expand into Europe and, of course, South Africa next year.  They have big plans.  Their community focus for each of the regional sites is excellent.  We're very happy with our decision to work with the Els Foundation, and their executive director Mary Kay Willson is a real pro.
