Re: Are higher stimp speeds becoming less desirable?

The top clubs are as focused on green speed as ever.  look at the turnover of green supts after this year (and last year)'s poor weather.  some top (or wanna be top) places would rather change supts then adjust green speed expectations for the conditions.

I wouldn't confuse a lack of comment on slower greens for the membership not noticeing--only the better and/or more frequent player will notice a change, and many of those wont say anything, preferring to let the supt have a respite from comments.

I would also note that hole placement has something (maybe more) to do with perceived speed for the avg member than maint--placing several holes at the bottom (or edge) of a slope near the back or side of a green will trigger more "its fast today" comments, as members are used to easy placements.  Combine the two, as is done for tournaments, and the comments start.

I too believe that stimp readings at a lot of clubs are inflated, or at least willfully measured improperly (kinda like the radar gun on the home team's pitcher at Yankee Stadium), to try to deflect criticism.
