Men of the cloth and GCA
« on: December 21, 2011, 01:24:21 PM »
West Cornwall was, it seems, laid out by Rev. F.F. Tyack. Royal Ashdown Forest is apparently the work of Archdeacon Scott. Peter Gannon was a Catholic priest before a) getting married and b) designing some fine courses in continental Europe. Are there others?

The nine hole course at The University of the South in Sewanee, TN was in part designed by the Rt. Rev. Albion Knight, an Episcopal bishop.

I'm delighted to report that Gil  Hanse has been retained to renovate the golf course:

I just believe it was the priests that were formally at St Andrews that inlisted architects to come and design courses all over Scotland.

Wasn't one of Crump's key confidants at PV a Catholic priest?

I started a thread once about clergy who were instrumental in helping form some English clubs.  I can't remember who they are anymore but I do remember that some pastor helped begin Royal North Devon.

My brother went to Sewanee in the mid-60's and loved that course.   I suspect it was because he would rather have been doing anything other than study.    I visited about 20 years and found a fairly run down nine holer with a nice routing.  Will it still be nine holes?

I jumped on this thread as soon as I saw it thinking it was a discussion of the most memorable round folks from GCA have played with you Tommy, but was bitterly disappointed to find out it wasn't.

BTW in my case I would nominate the round at Diamond Creek about 3 or 4 summers ago.

ps I got my ringtone set up for you last night...

Mark,

I think 2 of the 8 founders of the Kintyre Club in 1876 were churchmen. The 14th hole, Castlehill, is still named in honor of  one of them. The Reverend George Strange was minister of the church of that name in Campbeltown.

Didn’t Eddie Hackett consider the Priesthood?  He attended Mass every day and never married.

Anthony’s remarks are backed up on here long ago by the sadly missed Alfie Ward.  He said the once a town got a railway in Scotland the Minister was often among the local’s who organised a golf course.

For those who know nothing of Alfie - check out his authentic attire.

My dad is a theologian.  He has no connection to GCA.  But he is a golfer and introduced me to the game.  I recently found this photo of him (far left) on the golf course with some of his students in an old article written about him...

Since Quakers have no clergy this topic puts us at a disadvantage. But Rolling Green was started by Quakers who wanted to get away from the country club atmosphere at Springhaven. I happen to be a Quaker myself and studied in high school to be a Catholic priest. I think my attitudes toward golf course architecture are affected by this experience. Quakers espouse simplicity and that certainly appeals to me in courses.
