One course we might not have to worry about anymore
« on: September 04, 2011, 07:12:07 PM »
In the last two days I've seen or heard three references to the booming oil economy centered in Williston, N.D. I just found out my brother-in-law moved out there from Minneapolis for a job a couple of months ago; today a local TV station interviewed a woman at the Minnesota State Fair who was promising $70,000-per-year starting salaries for unskilled workers in the North Dakota oilfields; and that was followed by an NBC nightly news story about Williston, where they can't find enough workers to take all the available jobs.

The Links of North Dakota (Red Mike) is located 28 miles east of Williston, which has always seemed impossibly remote, even from the Twin Cities. For a number of years I have read concerns over the course's continued existence; that would not seem to be a problem anymore. Anyone been there recently who can comment on how the oil boom is affecting the Links of North Dakota?

Rick,

I've been back and forth to Minot lately (100 miles east of the Links of NDak) and I can tell you that the oil/gas boom is playing havoc with golf course staff salaries and budgets. Try hiring a crew member for your course at $15 an hour in that economy. There's also a massive housing shortage; every hotel in Minot and north central North Dakota has been booked up for years and the four new hotels going in at Minot are already presold-out for two years. So you have a weird economy, with the costs of everyday goods skyrocketing. Sure, there's more prosperity, but the whole pace of the local economy is very different. I'm not sure how many of those oil and gas workers play golf, anyway. High school grads are getting $70,000 to pull pipe and drive water trucks. We'll see.

A friend of mine from work @ Minot quit and happily joined Hess late last year.  He's one happy camper.

Funny this comes up.
I just played with a oilworker from North Dakota, he was in town (Bemidji, Mn) to play in a local tourny. He came over with a large group of oilworkers from ND. I asked about the job and he said that the money was great and that they live in camper/ trailer cities due to the shortage of housing. He said he has plenty of time to play. They work 2 weeks on 2 weeks off. He was a pretty good player.

He also said the course was good but that the course wasn't in very good shape. They still play all the time.
