I like the T-bone for two reasons:

First, there is almost no rake handle on the ground to interfere with a rolling ball.

Second, you don't have to bend over as far to grab the handle.

Bill,

Be honest, is that really the order of importance?  ;D

T bone for me. Combination of least impact on the ball and ease of maintenance.

What do you guys think of the underground boxes that some courses have for them? I don't think I've ever seen one but that seems like the biggest waste of money ever.

I was at a course that supplied rakes with every power cart. It wasn't effective with an all-walking group.

It's funny.

Here we are thinking of the correct way to put a rake in a bunker: a somewhat arbitrary task but one that is not without its debates. However in thinking about it just now, I've come to the conclusion that the correct method is not being implemented anywhere, well anywhere I've seen.

Rakes should be placed with the head parallel to the face of the bunker, and the handle pointed toward the center. Think about it. How is that going to affect the lie one receives? If the ball is going in the bunker, it will go right over the head of the rake and run parallel to the handle towards the center.

Problem solved?

I've played places like that before, those are probably the kind of places that don't allow walkers.

Out of the bunker on the side away from the green out of the line of play.

Sam, I have played a couple of courses that have them.  The first 2 or 3 times are kind of fun making the spring loaded rakes pop out of the ground, after that, I agree, big waste of money.

I am curious how much one of those units would cost.

But Sam, they allowed us to walk, thus the problem.

Then obviously you need to carry a rake and a sand bottle in your bag.  ;D

At the GCA get together at Cavendish I noticed that most bunkers had a short length of scaffolding pole hammered down into a corner and the rake handle was popped into that , with the head sticking up into the air.

I'd never seen this before, but it struck me as a rather neat solution.

Years ago I rode Bay Hill in a business group.  There was a rake sticking up from the back of our cart.   I left it in the bunker on #1.   The rest of the day went like this:  "Hey, can we borrow the rake?"

Mountain Lake does this.  When I walked I had to put the rake in my bag.

Ditto for Huntsman Springs in Idaho.  I played with one of the pros and we made a game of it as you had to keep carrying the rake until the other guy hit it in a bunker.

Inside the bunker with the handle within reach or resting just out.  I think it looks way better and saves our mowers and sprayers from having to get off the machine 136 x (2) times.  Saves man hours.

I have been doing it this way for over 30 years.  The actual rake is far enough in the bunker where it doesn't cause lip issues and the handle is sticking up in the air on the side of the bunker to encourage people to enter the bunker from the low side.  I have never seen anything which makes more sense from a user and erosion perspective so I never changed.  I hate rakes in bunkers because I see idiots climbing in from all directions without a care for erosion.  I also don't like the idea of an unnecessary piece of wood/plastic outside a bunker because it can influence play more there.  I figure there isn't much influence at all once a ball has entered the sand so long as the rake is properly placed.  I have seen the holders with the rake sticking straight up, but they are ugly - no go for me.

Sagebrush has bunkers but no rakes. The owner believe that bunkefrs should be hazardousd to your golfng health. I did purchase a small rake, but it was best used as a gag gift to one of the principals.

After a few years of T boning, our club just returned to the practice of leaving the rakes outside the bunkers in areas that should least affect play. The golf committee concluded that too many balls were coming to rest in awkward lies against the rake head inside the bunker.

Was at the FedEx at TPC Boston yesterday.  On the short par 4, 4th about 300 yards, there is a bunker to the left of the green that many, many players go in.  Luke
Donald is in it.  After the caddy rakes it, he carelessly throws the rake onto the fairway fronting the trap.  Then decides he better move it and haphazardly leaves it right in front of the trap.  An obvious accident waiting to happen.  Sure enough Garcia is next on the tee, hits the rack and ball settles in the rough.

Have been to numerous pro events and never before even noticed where a caddy left the rake.  I suspect at least on this hole, it is put in the rough to the side of the bunker where it would never keep a ball from rolling in.

I agree with that idea, they are hazards.

Although I agree with the premise that they are certainly meant to extract some measure of pain I disagree that you should have to play from a greenside bunker from a deep footprint. Just sayin.
