I received a bit of cash for christmas which means my ban on buying things related to golf has been lifted by wife. ;D

It's hard to go wrong with most books on your list, but I would recommend The Links. Everytime I read the book I come away with something new.

I only listed the architecture books I own, I have Final Rounds and agree with you it is a good book.  I was impressed with the way his Dad said no to getting on TOC in the back door.  Sounded like a true gentleman.

Brian,

I agree with Chris about the Tillie Trilogy.  Volume 2 was the least interesting, but did contain a map of Bethpage.  I also agree on Scotland's Gift - Golf.

Sidn't see Colt's "essays on golf arhcitecture" book on your list, but it should be there.  Also, Wethred and Simpson's "The Architectural Side of Golf" and Geoff's "The Captain" which includes not only a bio, but also sketches and quotes from Thomas.

I have re read them all, and Thomas and Hunter say the most to me.

John,

He lives in Norway for God sakes, which has to be a lot colder than your native Minnesota and your adopted Florida.  If he reads all winter and buys the driver just before summer (which I hear they have scheduled for July 10th this year) he would be doing things in the proper order!

Also, here's a golf course architects new years wish to Brian - that he be so busy building new courses that his golf game suffers as a result.

I still play with a Callaway warbird bought off a young pro at Downfield for £50.  That was at least 4 years ago!!  As Jeff mentioned all I do in the winter is wait for the snow to go away and then crack into 16 hour days constructing courses.

Brian,

I absolutely loved "Bury Me in a Pot Bunker" and "Discovering Donald Ross".  The confidential guide is great for a laugh and for resource knowledge.  If you want an obscure one, I still feel that Dr. Klein's first effort "Rough Meditations" is the single most readable book on golf architecture that I have ever come across.

I'm in the process of putting together an Access database of golf architecture related books I own and when I get it done I'll send it off to you.

In the meantime, be sure to get a copy of The Sandbelt.  It's pretty special, especially on Mr. Naccarato's favorite topic.

 Some Essays...  is available in softcover for about $30 through either Grant Books in the UK or Rhod McEwan in Scotland (sorry I can't remember which catalog had it). I would save my cash for Doak's book on Pacific Dunes out later this year or George Bahto's long-awaited opus.

I would definitely add "The Architectural Side of Golf" by Wethered and Simpson as one of the all-time classics. A great new book is Paul Daley's "Sandbelt", and as a bonus, suggest you treat yourself to a subscription to our "Golf Architecture" magazine of which I am co-editor (subscription information on the Golf Architecture thread currently on the DG - shameless self promotion I know!)

Light reading, but fun was "Links of Heaven, A guide to Golf Journey's in Ireland" by Phinney and Whitley.  Also, since you are in construction, "Driving the Green" by John Strawn.  I recently received my third in the trilogy of Tillie, "Gleanings from the Wayside" that is a fun read.  I love the archaic manner of speaking or writing Tillie uses.  Can anyone tell me how you identify his unique writer's voice?  Is it something like old New England Yankee dialect or what?

John Conley, a new Ping driver??? That's so funny, I was thinking the same thing! I have most of those books, but would definitely buy the new Ping driver given a few extra bucks.  

The third leg of the Tillie trilogy ("Gleanings from the Wayside") is great.  My wife gave it to me for Christmas, big surprise.  Tillie has some great thoughts on trees ("it's much easier to cut one down than to grow a new one") and bunkers ("should be cut close to the green surface" and there are way too many on most courses).

Could someone please help me.  I have the same question -What to buy next?  However the list of current books I own stands at zero.  So where is a good place to get started?  Is there anywhere on the Web that has reviews of GCA books?  (Would it be a worthy addition to this site?)

My general requirements would be, three-four books that are must reads, good value for money, and easily available (Sydney or Melbourne.)  Any advice would be much appreciated.

My advice for entry level is still Cornish and Whitten's work, "The Golf Course", followed by "Spirit of St Andrews" from MacKenzie's wiritings, and "Golf Has Never Failed Me" by Ross, and Shackelford's "Golden Era of Golf Course Design".  If those easy to read works don't inspire you to go on to read so many other great golf design writers/commentators of past and present, then I don't think you will find this to be your cup of tea...

Oh boy, I got a gift card for Christmas from Barnes and Noble an just got home from shopping to use it up. I found "The Scrapbook of Old Tom MOrris" compiled by David Joy.  It looks like a winner... ;D

AA is the Automobile Association in Britain.  They publish a book along with one of the national newspapers that lists every golf course in the kingdom.

Since the British invented everything  ;)they don't do things like put "American" or "US" in front of everything.  For example, see "The Open Championship"
