I've played MPCC to many times to count. I absolutely love the setting but I look at courses more from a tournament perspective. I believe the ones I mentioned are much better tournament courses. I completely agree about the 18th on the shore course!

Snaugler,

Thats all fine and good, but 99.99% of the time these courses just deal with normal member play.  So to me that trumps the fact that Olympia or Winged Foot may have two courses that are "better" tournie courses for the big boys.

Every thread turns into a pissing contest, doesn't it? I think the title is "best ... clubs," not "rate the clubs based on minutiae."

There are some comments in the 18th of the Shore Course that need a response.

The hole was the last to be completed before Mike Strantz's untimely death. It was the 17th hole of the old Shore course, not the greatest
piece of land but was always fun to play. I remember that a good friend of mine, Andy Nottenkamper, a six time Club Champion, might have
won three more were it not for the green complex there.

Just over a year ago, Gil Hanse was called in to renovate the hole at a cost of $500,000.00 or some such number. An improvement was made in the siting of bunkers to allow a better landing area for the drive. Then there was a peculiar arrangement of waste bunkers in front of the tees that could only cause the highest handicappers any problems. The green turned out be be a bit of a disaster surrounded by bunkers and grasses that bore no relationship to what Mike had produced throughout the rest of the course. The Club decided that the green complex should be altered and that has now been done by Mr. Hanse's team. It looks much better but as yet it is not open for play.

I know for a fact the Mr. Hanse has done superb renovations elswhere, Sleepy Hollow and LACC come to mind but in my own opnion and obviously the Green Committee at the Club, thought otherwise.

Did anyone mention Colleton River yet?  I only played the Nicklaus course, but friends have told me that Dye is its equal.  Certainly as worthy of a mention as several other clubs listed.

Black Diamond Ranch too.  The Quarry course is world class and their other 18 is a solid Fazio.
