Dormant Zoysia
« on: January 08, 2012, 04:59:11 PM »
Am I the only one that has been enjoying the dormant zoysia fairways this unseasonably warm winter?  In the heat and humidity of summer, zoysia plays like velcro, but when they are dormant they have wonderful lies and rolls.

Does bermuda play this way in the winter or are there any other types of grasses that have such a wide and contrasting range of play when active and dormant?

Jason,

Completely agree. My home course has bent fairways, but last week my buddy and I walked 18 on New Years Day at a course in KC. The zoysia fairways were a helluva lot more fun than in the summertime.

It was definitely fun to see the ball actually roll along the ground a little as opposed to bouncing once and stopping.

Hi Brandon, It took me a bit of time to get used to zoysia coming from bent, however in July and August the bent fairways were usually over watered and mushy to beat the heat.  Here in Kansas, the bent greens get stressed in July and August and the zoysia seems to thrive.

I have often wondered if the grass selection influences design decisions with regards to playability?

Last year was my first season playing on bent fairways... like you, living in Kansas pretty much means zoysia.

The fairways were pretty mushy last year in August, but I guess it's pretty hard to get the sprinklers turned off. I won't lie, I do miss the zoysia sometimes.

Brauer's Eagle Bend in Lawrence is switching fairways over to zoysia from what I would guess is a fescue mix (I'm no grass expert). They had a ton of trouble keeping the old fairways alive. It plays a lot different with the new grass. The fescue would run forever... especially late in the summer. The new fairways are nice to hit off of, but the fun of running the ball along the ground is pretty much gone.

Some of the newer zoysias are excellent.  We have one and there isnt the velcro effect because the blades are finer I believe.  It is terrific in season, and plays good now while dormant.
