My last time out for the year, on my home course a week or two after Halloween, I noticed a few holes had a trench a couple feet wide dug out and resodded in front of the green. On the 18th one of the student assistants was out there throwing sod down on top and I asked him if they had put in some sort of french drain to help those holes that tended towards sogginess in front of the green. He said it was for drainage but was not a french drain, it was a water witch. Anyone ever heard of that?
Whatever the technology, I am glad to see they were doing this. Probably 2/3 of the greens allow some for sort of non-aerial approach, at least from certain angles, but some holes have suffered from a tendency towards mushiness in front of the green - even when there's been no rain (i.e., just from the irrigation) Next season should offer a few new shots between that and a few tees that will supposedly stretch the course to over 7300 yards (which I never would have believed possible, but then I would have never thought of putting teeboxes where they have on a couple of these holes!)
