The first one is easy - Gib's hometurf. Of course you can't tell from the aerial how all the fairways cant the wrong way. How else to make a 6,800 yard course difficult?

Scott, the really scary thing is that the second one appears from the bunkering to have been taken after a restoration program eliminated 400 trees.

My clue in the second one was referring to something else, not it being a Jewish club, though there is somewhat of a connection.

And it has been said in the past and bears repeating, none of these aerials can show elevation changes and ground movement. That's where it's fun to get get ground shots to show the contours.

I know both of these,

but I have a question for those that know the course in #1. It appears in the lower right there are a couple of extra holes and over along the far left there is another short hole? Are these for the other course at the club or do they serve another purpose such as replacements holes if a hole is under construction or something?

Chris - picture #1 is primarily the most famous course at a club that has 3 courses, and the "extra" holes you inquire about are on the 2nd course there. In addition, the short hole you see in the extreme left above the globe explorer thing is the last hole on the 3rd course.

On #1:

Is that the 8th green at 2 o'clock from the clubhouse? I've always pictured it as being shallower than that.

Are those grass courts?

Is that parking lot ever filled?

Yes, that's the 8th green. It's actually pretty deep, which adds to the challenge, particularly if the pin is back.

I don't THINK those are grass courts, it would shock the heck out of me, but then again, I'm so focused when I go to this club that I never even knew they HAD tennis courts at all!

Sure the lot is filled at times. They tend to have certain "events" there.

The light just dawned on #2. Great clue, Scott.

That's quite a coincidence, really: At about midnight last night, I found -- and added to one of the Match Play threads -- a quotation from Bobby Jones's "Down the Fairway."

While skimming it in search of the sought-for lines, I noticed a reference to today's Aerial Course No. 2 -- a course I'd never heard of when I first read the book, and that rang no bells with me then (except for bells relative to Scott's clue), but which I have seen mentioned here often enough in recent months that it jumped off the page at me last night.

OK, I did a course search on Ross courses near Chicago and I THINK I know which one it is, but the lightbulb remains dim re Scott's clue, even when this is so narrowed down! I guess it's just me... So don't give this away yet anyway.

On the first is that a Lake or an Ocean closest to those 2 holes at the bottom right?

Funny if you think about it.

The other way to make a 6800 yd course so hard is to have the fairways always plug due to the subsoil composition. What you carry is what you get, and you have to walk up behind your ball to find it plugged. As for trees, the top one lost over 2000 total in the past 2 El Ninos, from what I understand.

Shivas, sorry if I gave away too much on this one so early in the game. I'm still new at this "aerial of the day" stuff and will have to try retraining myself when I fully do recognize something.

Without giving away the whole thing as to #2, I do find it amazing that in a previous incaranation on the national stage, the layout was barren of trees. Then over the next 75 years it got completely jungled in. (Check out the old/new photo juxtaposition in my book.) Then the place goes through a model restoration program spearheaded by a persistent and very intelligent superintendent and one of the best architects specializing in this sort of thing. And in the end (I presume) it still looks like it could lose about another 400 trees.

I am working on a My Home Course profile on the second course - whose name was the title of a made for tv movie starring Danny Kaye. Thanks Scott for putting it up - it is my first view of the place from the air after the restoration.

Well, one's officially out of the bag, #2 is Skokie CC, in Glencoe, IL, of all places (not Skokie), and the first is the Lake course at Olympic, home club of a couple GCAers.

I figured now's the best time to do Olympic.

The first clue for Skokie was a reference to the late 70's Neo-Nazi march in the significantly Jewish Village of Skokie. Nazis rightfully claimed freedom of speech, yada yada yada. Blatant reference to it in the movie The Blues Brothers, filmed a year or two later, of course, in the Chicago area.

The Risky Business reference is much more insignificant. Given that the movie came out not long after I learned about the march in History class, the reference to Skokie stuck out in my mind. At the party, during the interview with the guy from Princeton, a friend of Joel's asks if his cousin can get "in" soon, because his cousin came all the way from Skokie. That's all. Call me Mr. Boring Trivia.

No hassles re the clues, Scott - I found them pretty darn clever even if the Nazi march one had to be explained to me off-line by Dan K. and shivas!

As for Risky Business, you're not the only one carrying around useless tidbits there. For years I assumed the University of Illinois was a piece of crap school based on the exclamation by Tom Cruise at the end ("looks like University of Illinois!").

OClub looks pretty darn cool from the air....

Note that the trees behind the 15th green (middle right on picture #1) have been removed. Unfortunately (from Gib's perspective) the fallen trees did not land on the green.

The trees to teh left of 16 were not there in Bob Jones day and I understand he was able to hit # 16 in two mighty blows in his day. (That's the
hole to the left of the two holes at the very bottom right (Which are part of the ocean course (Much later added (1988ish, Kevin correct me if I am wrong.)) I think it's kind of a cute bit of trivia that those two holes are closer to the "Lake" than any remaining holes on the "Ocean" course are to the "Ocean".

When Ifirst moved to SF there were still about 5 holes from the original ocean course on the west side of teh road and you could see the abandoned remnants of several more to the north.

I always had a real pang in my goling heart that I could never play those holes. (Daniel Wexler or Gib, is there a good aerial of that original layout?)

The Ocean course was re-done a few times and eventually land was needed to the left of 16 (as you play the hole, E and SE as the crow flies) to accommodate holes for that course.

The Lake course at the O is a lovable brute, but a little unidimensional. Probably a place the Open always ought to rotate through permanently.
