Is there a course that

You are compelled to try to play again and again even though you play bad there every time. ( even if only played once )

Mine would be Olympic- Lake course

I have played there twice and both times didnt have my best round.
I can not seem to get my best game going there . it requires so many shots.

Rob, a good and essential question.

Here's my guess at an answer: they design their courses based on principles, not on players -- with the first principle being that every player should have a way around the course.

Edit; Rob, you changed the thread and the question just as I posted, so my answer makes absolutely no sense. But i like it so much I'll leave it here.... :D

Rob, is Olympic Lake a good example?   ;D

It might be the hardest course I have played for every level of golfer.   Long par 4s, one after another.  Reverse camber fairways, where a reasonably solid tee ball can leave you 300 yards out on a 420 yard par 4.   :o.

Give me another example please.   Oakmont?

Chris ,

I am dying to play Kingsley. I grew up in Michigan a, but did not take up golf until after I moved away.

Now that I am playing, I want to hit all the top Michigan courses.
Played Arcadia, Forrest Dunes, Black Lake, Pilgrims Run and some others.

but Kingsley has been on my radar for a while.
